History of Listowel Junior Hockey

It was in 1972 that the Listowel Junior Cyclones were born.  Named after the Great Fred “Cyclone” Taylor, they began as a Junior C team and were a force to be reckoned with. At that time, Junior C Hockey was probably more comparable to the current Junior B level. We were able to see some thrilling hockey and Listowel was always near the top of the league. After earning 2 championships over a 7 year period, the time had come for the team to make the jump to the Junior B level.

It was becoming obvious at that time that many of our more talented young players were starting to head out to the Junior B level which was really starting to progress. The 1979-1980 season was the first at the B level. At this level, the team has been very competitive for the majority of the years and not competitive during others. Through the entire span of years though, the Cyclones have always provided some good competition and great hockey entertainment for our local fans.  As probably the strongest Junior B league in our province, Listowel has been the spot to be to see fast paced Junior Hockey. Being able to watch such storied teams as the Siskins, Cullitons, SugarKings, etc. in our small town has been very exciting.

As 1 of only 3 community funded teams in our league, keeping a team of this level on the ice, in a town of our size, is truly a credit to all of our financial supporters, volunteers, and fans. There have been a huge number of volunteers over the years that have been on the executive, helped out with the team, sold tickets, and helped in many other ways.  Here’s a Cyclonic THANK YOU to everyone who has helped to keep our Cyclones on the ice.
