Brantford Score 5 In 3rd To Take 8-3 Victory
On Saturday, February 18th/ 2012 in Game #48, the Cyclones fought hard for 60 minutes but could not match Brantford in an 8 -3 loss. After a tough contest the night before, the already short Cyclones bench was shorter by 2 more due to illness and injury. Despite this the team battled on and took advantage of Brantford lapses to keep the score close to within a 3-2 count in the 3rd period; before the home side pulled away with 3 straight. Down to 4 men, the defencemen played hard in each and every shift. Mike Pesendorfer was brilliant – making some big saves on tricky shots from close range but was equally powerless on shots from inside the hash marks. The forwards gave it their best effort and made some nifty scoring plats – s sneaky short side shot with laser precision from Jeff Bauer, a slick finish by Dylan Sayles and a nice display of speed, hustle and shooting by David Dalby. Pat Bell was wreaking havoc with some big hits in the 3rd period and was rewarded by a Brantford stick chopping him to the head and throat. Pat remained composed and did not retaliate as the offending player sat out for 4 minutes. The Cyclones are commended for their composure and sportsmanship as the final few minutes passed.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: All Cyclones on the game roster are commended for their continued commitment and perseverance. These young men have not given up so we must acknowledge and honor that effort; giving them our undivided support.

The Dutchmen always play with a scrappy style….so expect another tough game.

WinterHawks Skate to 8-2 Win Over Cyclones
On Friday, February 17th/ 2012 in Game #47, the Cyclones tangled with the Cambridge Winterhawks and at the end of 60 minutes the visitors emerged with an 8 – 2 win. The Cyclones managed 53 shots on goal and had 11 power plays but could only muster one goal with the man advantage. The visitors went 3 for 7 on their power play and added another short - handed as well. Despite being short of manpower and despite the lopsided score the Cyclones are to be commended for keeping their composure and playing with a high degree of sportsmanship. The Cyclones opposition seemed to thrive on drama and controversy, taking 16 minutes in penalties on one play in the second period and making various other deliberate attempts to injure Cyclones players. In the 3rd period the visitors continued to target one of the Cyclones players in particular and in the process injured him to the point of taking him out of the game – making good on their comments to the Cambridge media that they had some “jersey numbers” to take note of.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Captain Brett McGuinness #12 - Scored the 1st Cyclones goal with a nifty redirection and assisted on the 2nd Cyclones goal. Brett is the consummate team player who works hard every shift and does what he can to help his team be successful. Good job Brett.
2 Points: Jarret Kup #8 - Registered 1 assist on the Mc Guinness goal and played hard at both ends all evening long. Jarrett and the rest young blue liners have improved and matured since the start of the season.
1 Point: Pat Bell #20 - The Grand Valley forward made a fine effort in his dash down the right wing to cut in close and slip a shot through for the 2nd Cyclones goal. After a slow 1st half of the season, Pat has had a better result in the 2nd half and looks to be ready for the playoffs.

WinterHawks Shut-out Cyclones 4-0
On Saturday, February 11th/ 2012 in Game #46, the Cyclones were shut out at Galt Arena Gardens in Cambridge as the home side Winterhawks 4 scored times and by doing so, clinched 4th place in the Midwest Division of the GOJHL.
The Cyclones managed 29 shots on goal and put forth a full out effort the entire game but could not engineer enough breaks around the blue paint of the Cambridge net. Cyclones goaltender Brandon McDonald had a busy game, steering aside 37 of 41 shots on goal, most of them from close range with traffic in front. Neither team scored with the man advantage – the Cyclones were 0 for 5 while the home side was 0 for 3. As always, this game was on the rough and chippy side, as Cambridge came out on a mission to decapitate their opposition; and they were very close in succeeding on a handful of dangerous collisions in the danger area along the boards.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Brandon McDonald #31 – Brandon steered aside 37 of 41 shots as he had a busy evening in the blue paint for the Cyclones. Good job Brandon.
2 Points: The rest of the Cyclones game roster earns 2 points for their hard work and dedication in this game. Keep up the effort men.

Hurricanes Win 9-5 In Listowel
On Friday, February 10th/ 2012 in Game #45, the Cyclones scored 5 times on the 50 shots that were aimed at Colin Furlong in the Guelph Hurricanes net. This season, such an effort would ordinarily translate into a win for the Men in Black. In this game it was not enough as Guelph scored 9 times on 36 shots at 15 year old rookie net minder Daniel Dekoning en route to a 9-5 win at Memorial Arena. For the Listowel native it was a baptism of fire as he had his hands full with a speedy set of Guelph forwards in his inaugural game as a Cyclone. Give him full credit for standing tough and not backing down one inch. The Cyclones were down 3-1 after 20 minutes and 7-2 after 40 minutes. The home side narrowed the gap to 7-4 at the 4:11 mark of the 3rd period. 14 seconds later any thoughts of a Cyclones rally were squashed quickly as Guelph upped the lead to 8-4; and both teams traded goals to finish out the scoring. Guelph was 0 for 2 on the power play while the Cyclones were 1 for 2 on the night.
David Dalby led the home side with 2 goals and one assist, followed by Caleb Cameron with 1 goal and 2 assists, Pat Bell with 1 goal and 1 assist and Ben Shelley with 1 goal and 1 assist. Blueliner Craig Johnson had 2 assists and single helpers went out to Kyle Ellis, Jeff Bauer, and Jordon Skerrett.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: David Dalby#9 - David was a Cyclonic force as he played hard for the full 60 minutes. Regardless of the score David led his mates by example and giving his all, scoring twice and assisting once.
2 Points: Caleb Cameron #10 - Caleb had another steady performance and notched 2 goals and one assist using hard work and dedicated effort to keep up his offensive output.
1 Point: Pat Bell #20 - Pat scored once and assisted once and was another Cyclones forward who was persevering and working hard for 60 minutes.

Cullitons Earn 8-2 Win in Listowel
On this day, the Cyclones didn't have enough to get the job done against a powerful Cullitons team. The Cyclones did have a lead of 2-1 after the first period but after 3, it was 8-2 for Stratford.
With only 13 players on the bench due to recent injuries and an awesome scrap on Friday night, it made for a tough afternoon for the Cyclones. A big crowd was on hand for this popular Perth County match up. We can't thank Ideal Supply enough for being a long time Corporate Sponsor and also for arranging that all fans get in for free today.
If all of this wasn't enough, The North Perth Hospice had their annual Teddy Bear Toss and the ice was covered after Caleb Cameron scored the first Cyclone goal. The Listowel Figure Skating Club helped to gather up the bears and all in all, this was a great afternoon at the Listowel Memorial Arena.
Although the game slipped away from the Cyclones, they did not stop to battle and as we head toward playoffs, this group will continue to get stronger as a team.
Molson 3 Star Performers:
1- Caleb Cameron- scored both Cyclone goals today and was a powerful force all game long
2- Craig Johnson, Jarrett Kup, Jordon Skerrett, Sam Patterson- this gang of 4 D-men battled hard for 60 minutes and although the scored wasn't in our favour, they did not give up.
3- David Dalby- David worked hard, hit hard, and gave it his usual 110% effort
Cyclonic Team Effort With 7-0 Win Over Siskins
On Friday, February 3rd / 2012 in Game #43, the Cyclones demolished Waterloo by a 7 – 0 score and by doing so they grabbed sole possession of 6th place in the GOJHL Midwest Division. Playoff positioning was on the line and despite being outnumbered in this match the home side prevailed with a superior effort as they stayed focused on playing a hard, fast, disciplined and intense 60 minute game. The Men in Black pounded both Waterloo goaltenders with 43 shots and scored 3 times in13 power play chances. Meanwhile, in the defensive zone Michael Pesendorfer turned aside all 37 shots that he faced; and had special help from his “Gang of Four” defencemen and from the forwards, as the penalty killing unit was a spotless 6 for 6 against the Siskins.
Pat Bell got the Cyclones swirling and churning with their first goal at 4:18. Bell got the play started by dumping the puck in deep and chasing. Sam Patterson gained control of the puck at the right wing point, made a forward pass to Captain Brett Mc Guinness at the right faceoff circle. Brett passed down low to Pat at the right hash marks, turned into the slot, dangled, waited for the goaltender to commit himself, swept around the sprawling net minder and swept the puck into the yawning cage. Beauty!!! Waterloo thought they had tied the game at 11:52 but were denied by a high stick call from the referee. On the ensuing face off outside the Cyclones zone, the home squad pounced as they tore down the right side on a 3 on 2 rush, cashing in with their 2nd goal at 12:09. Captain Brett Mc Guinness flipped a backhand shot to the short side that squeezed through and into the mesh – Craig Johnson and Colton Pickett assisted on the play…another Cyclonic example of teamwork. The brisk pace of the game was continued by both squads
and it was the Cyclones turn to have a goal disallowed at 14:33 for goaltender interference. Waterloo changed their goaltenders at this point and called a time out in order to get their team refocused but it was of little avail. Jeff Bauer very nearly made it 3-0 with a shorthanded steal attempt off of the stick of the Waterloo goaltender but the puck drifted opposite to the direction of travel and no shot on the open net could be made. A late Waterloo penalty gave rise to a dangerous looking Cyclones power play but no further scoring resulted. The Cyclones outshot their opponents by a 13 to 11 count. In the 2nd period the Cyclones broke the scoring open with 3 goals…two of which with the man advantage. With a 5 on 3 power play; the Cyclones called a time out and using a text book play they grabbed a 3-0 lead. Jarrett Kup slammed home the puck into the gaping cage as Caleb Cameron and David Dalby teamed up to provide the set up. Cyclonic team work at its best – awesome!!! Demoralized by that goal, Waterloo blew some more fuses and took more penalties including 3 by one player in a 3 second dialogue with the referee. No goals were scored on the ensuing power plays but on 4 on 4 play, at 11:55 the home side struck at even strength. Jordon Skerrett and Pat Bell worked the puck deep into the zone and Captain Brett McGuinness finished the play by walking out from behind the net, dangling the puck, drawing the goaltender down and out before roofing the puck. Boo-yah!!!!. At 15:35 the Cyclones power play struck again as Craig Johnson unleashed a rising howitzer shot from the right wing point that threaded itself through traffic and into the mesh. Dylan Sayles worked hard to get the puck deep and Sam Patterson faked out the forward defenders on the left wing point before dishing off the puck across the ice to Craig. Yet another Cyclonic display of teamwork. Double Boo-Yah !!! The Cyclones outshot the Siskins by a 21 to 14 margin.
In the 3rd period the Cyclones sealed the deal with 2 more goals and Mike Pesendorfer and the defenders put on a shutdown clinic against the Siskins snipers. Already on the power play, the Cyclones put an extra attacker on the ice during a delayed penalty call. Colton Pickett buried the biscuit – shoveling home the puck from the doorstep a brief goalmouth scramble produced a loose puck. For Pickett it was his 4th goal in 7 games as a Cyclone, and he was assisted by Captain Brett McGuinness and Caleb Cameron. In the action that followed, David Dalby tagged a Waterloo player with a stiff body check, stopping him in his tracks in the slot as he tried to advance on the net with the puck. Meanwhile, Michael Pesendorfer used his mitt to snag a bullet shot from the always dangerous and devious Kyle Platzer who used the Cyclones defender as a screen as he shifted from the outside to the inside before releasing the quick shot from the top of the circles. At 11:20 he gloves were off as Cyclones Captain Brett McGuinness and Waterloo’s Brodie Smith tangled in a spirited scrap. Captain McGuinness tagged the much larger Smith hard with several shots to the noggin and was the victor of the bout by unanimous decision – as both the Cyclones bench and the Cyclones faithful erupted with roars of their approval. Michael Pesendorfer continued his solid goaltending effort as he denied repeated Waterloo scoring attempts including some highlight reel stretch pad saves and another snag with the catching mitt. Caleb Cameron concluded the scoring at 15:21 with an unassisted effort that was pure Caleb Cameron styled speed and science as he swooped in behind the net to steal the puck, emerged on the other side with the puck and then stuffed it in all in one fluid and seamless motion. Wow!!!
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Brett McGuinness #12 - The Cyclones Captain notched the Gordie Howe Hat Trick scoring twice, assisting twice and then laying a solid thrashing on a foolish Waterloo forward in a third period scrap. Brett was a Cyclonic Machine of Power in this game. Though he is Small He is Fierce – don’t mess with Brett!!! Well Done Sir!!! Well Done!!!
2 Points: Michael Pesendorfer #1 - The Cyclones net minder played an inspired game and electrified his team mates and the home town fans with some solid goaltending in this game. The Pez turned aside all 37 Waterloo shots for his 1st shutout of the season. Pez for Prez in 2012!!!!
1 Point: Listowel Defenceman - All four Cyclones defenders rose to the occasion and met the challenge of this game head on. Sam Patterson #25, Craig Johnson #24, Jarret Kup #8 and Jordon Skerrett #3 were tough as nails in this game as they worked their collective tails off to secure the win and help preserve the shut out. Excellent work men!!!

Winterhawks Squeak By Cyclones 3-2
On Saturday, January 28th / 2012 in Game #42, the Cyclones battled the 4th place Cambridge Winterhawks at the Galt Arena Gardens on Shade Street. Both the Cyclones and the Winterhawks have had a storied playoff rivalry in recent seasons and this Arena and its patrons have borne witness to some intense, hardnosed and at times….wild and crazy hockey. This game was cut from the very same fabric of the cloth of that tradition.
The Cyclones pumped the home squad’s net minder with 44 shots on goal and put forth a solid 60 minute effort but despite their best work they fell short at the hands of a turnover inside of their own blueline that ended up in the back of the net. Simply stated, the Cyclones were deserving of a better fate this evening.
The Cyclones got their evening off to a good start at 5:49 of the opening period with an even strength goal from rookie forward Ben Shelley. Jarret Kup started the play at the Cyclones end of the rink by snapping a pass into the neutral zone where Chris Chapman collected the puck and then sent Shelley on the loose down the right wing. Ben roared in around the hapless defender, unloaded a shot, collected the generous rebounds off the pads and slipped the puck through the legs of the net minder who could not recover in time. It was a Cyclonic display of team work. Great work Men!!!
This lead held up until 4;31 of the 2nd period when the home side evened the score after the initial shot rattled off of the bar and then was knocked in on the ensuing goal mouth scramble. The Cyclones regained the lead playing 4 on 4 at 8:22. Kyle Ellis fed the puck up ice to Chris Chapman who broke in on the right wing side and gained the zone on a 2 on 1 play. With the lone Cambridge defender sprawling on the ice Chris centered the puck into the slot where Dylan Sayles was driving hard to the blue paint from the edge of the crease. Dylan rapped in the puck past the net minder. Another fine example of Cyclonic team work!! The lead was short lived as the home side notched another goal 37 seconds later at 8:59 to tie the game.
From that point the game within a game that was being played continued to unfold. Plenty of rough stuff was being inflicted at both ends as each team was giving as good as they were getting. Worthy of note was the unique checking style of the home side as they took specific aim from the shoulders up. It would be impolite and unsporting to name names; so let’s not sully ourselves at this point with further details and such. In the third period the home side scored what would be the game winning goal in the 2nd minute. In the 3rd period the Cyclones pumped 20 shots on goal and endured continued attacks but could not find the back of the net for the game equalizer.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Chris Chapman #14 - The Cyclones forward assisted twice on both of the Cyclones goals to pace the scoring attack.
2 Points: Ben Shelley #28 - The youngster from Guelph scored the Cyclones first goal and had a strong game up front on the Cyclones forward lines.

Cyclones Battle Hard in 8-4 Loss to SugarKings
On Friday, January 27th / 2012 in Game #41, the Cyclones battled the defending 2011 Sutherland Cup Champions but in the end their Highway #86 rivals put forth just too much of everything in a 8 – 4 decision over the Red, White and Black. One power play goal in 3 tries and 2 shorthanded goals were used to propel Elmira to the win but give the Cyclones credit for battling back from a 5-1 deficit to creep within 1 goal at 6:07 of the 3rd period.
Elmira jumped out to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes, the Cyclones closed within 1 goal at 1:33 of the 2nd period, and Elmira scored three 2nd period goals before Listowel replied with one of their own in that frame. In the 3rd period the Cyclones reeled off two quick goals in under 2 minutes and they continued to press for an equalizer but the backbone of that collective team effort was broken by 3 more Elmira goals in the final 7 ½ minutes of play.
The Cyclones made good on 2 of 8 power play chances and directed 42 shots on goal and during their comeback push, the Cyclones had the Elmira defence backing up and making mistakes; and had their goaltender second guessing himself and fighting the puck. The key to the Cyclones come back push was their ability to take the body to their opponents and effectively slow down their opponents’ free-wheeling offence – just enough to allow their own offence to roll and even up the odds. Elmira’s offence was able to grab another gear and strike back with rattle snake reflexes to counter strike the Cyclones attack. In the end Elmira had a longer bench and fresher legs to play out the full 60 minutes at top speed, while the shortened bench of the Cyclones did not provide the home squad with similar capacities.
The Cyclones scoring was credited to Caleb Cameron (2G), Jarrett Kup (1G), David Dalby (1G), and Kyle Ellis (2A), Jeff Bauer (2A), and 1A each to Brett McGuinness, Matt Halloran, Pat Bell and Graham Kitching.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Caleb Cameron #10 - The Cyclones 2nd year forward scored twice – once on the power play and once at even strength to lead the Cyclones scoring in the game. In addition, Caleb was hustling hard in his own end in an effort to blunt the Elmira attack.
2 Points: Jarrett Kup #8 - The Cyclones rookie defenceman got the Cyclones scoring going with a calm and cool move from the blueline, deftly dodging an Elmira defender, sidestepping the reach of the stick and wiring a hard and low shot through the legs of the goal tender.
1 Point: Dylan Sayles #11 - The Cyclones rookie forward cranked up the physical play as he was a demon on skates, laying the body to anything in a green and white jersey, providing the catalyst for the Cyclones come back.

Cullitons Edge Cyclones 4-3
On Sunday, January 22nd / 2012 in Game #40, the Cyclones battled hard for 60 minutes but fell one goal short in a 4-3 decision against the Cullitons. It was another decent effort on home ice by the Men In Black but the Hockey Gods did not have a better fate in store for the home side. The Cyclones led the shots on goal by a 36 – 35 edge, were 2 for 7 on the power play and 4 or 4 on the penalty kill. At various times in the game the opposition pushed the Cyclones onto their heels and at other times the Cyclones were able to push back and apply some pressure onto the opposition. At times the game took on a physical flavour, as both teams were able to give out and take some stiff and bone jarring hits.
The Cyclones kicked off the scoring with a 5 on 3 power play goal at 6:19 of the 1st period. Sam Patterson and Craig Johnson criss-crossed the puck at the blue line before Craig unleashed a hard and low shot through traffic that bounced off of the goal pads and onto the stick of Caleb Cameron; who quickly slid it into the yawning cage from the weak side. The opposition equalized the score at 10:16 with an efficient 2 on 1 rush that was started through the neutral zone. The brisk pace of play continued until 13:26 when the opposition won a mismatch in size as they battled and gained control of the puck after the face off, shooting through a crowd. The opposition continued to apply some strong pressure to trap the Cyclones inside their own zone for the majority of the remainder of the opening stanza. The Cyclones were outshot 14 to 7.
The 2nd period started much the way the 1st period ended, with the opposition hemming the Cyclones inside their own zone. Matt Halloran made a nice break up play on a threatening 3 on 1 rush. Shortly afterwards, the Cyclones drew a penalty and went net to work on the PP. Sam Patterson’s left wing point shot equalized the score at 2’s at 5:04 – assists were recorded by Craig Johnson and Brett Mc Guinness. The opposition regained their lead 25 seconds later, after winning the face off inside the Cyclones zone – a face off which resulted after a Cyclones offside play on the previous sequence. The Cyclones finished the middle frame of play with a flourish, buzzing the opposition net with notable scoring attempts by Jeff Bauer and Caleb Cameron. The Cyclones led the shots on goal in the 2nd period by a 16 to 9 margin.
In the 3rd period, the Cyclones could not connect on the power play and within seconds of that penalty expiring, the opposition bagged their 4th goal. The Cyclones continued to battle and their efforts were rewarded at 18:19. Caleb Cameron fed a lead pass into the neutral zone for Jeff Bauer and the speedy forward from Lambeth roared in on the right wing, unleashing a hard and low shot. The puck went off of the pads and Aaron Armstrong was at the right place at the right time to jam in the rebound from the weak side. This set up for a drama filled finish as the Cyclones had their goaltender pulled with 70 seconds left, an opposition icing with 52 seconds left, an opposition penalty was called with 38 seconds left, and 2 goal mouth scrambles on separate sequences all in the dying seconds of the match.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Michael Pesendorfer #1 - The Cyclones net minder was sharp turning aside 31 of 35 shots on goal, battling hard in the blue paint to keep his team in the contest.
2 Points: Craig Johnson #24 - The newly acquired Cyclones blueliner was working hard in his own zone and was an important part of the power play, registering 2 assists.
1 Point: Sam Paterson #25 - The Cyclones veteran blueliner and Captain scored 1 goal, assisted on 1 goal and was another stalwart defender inside of his own zone during the game.

Cullitons Win 5-1 Over Cyclones
On Friday, January 20th / 2012 the Cyclones were bowled over by the Cullitons by a 5-1 score. The Cyclones matched their opponents stride for stride in the opening 20 minutes but the short bench of the Cyclones was a distinct disadvantage. Over the final 40 minutes the home side wore down the Cyclones in their own end, and conversely, the Cyclones could not apply sustained any wear and tear on the opponents defence. To their credit the Cyclones hung tough, battled hard and did not let their opponents push them off the ice. Shots on goal were 39 – 27 for the home side and the Cyclones were 0 for 7 on the power play and 5 for 6 on the penalty kill.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Colton Pickett #27 - The newly acquired Cyclones forward was the lone bright spot on the score sheet with a good effort inside the hash marks to knock in the rebound while falling down; after Craig Johnson and Jeff Bauer started the play with consecutive shots on goal.
2 Points: Brett Mc Guinness #12 - The Cyclones Alternate Captain played hard at both ends of the ice, working on the penalty kill, the power play and at even strength.
1 Point: David Dalby # 9 – David was another Cyclone who was working hard at both ends of the ice despite the score on the board…gutsy play all the way.

SugarKings Over Cyclones By 6-3 Score
On Sunday, January 15th / 2012 the Cyclones were feeling a little green after another Highway 86 battle inside the Dan Snyder Memorial Arena in Elmira. The defending Sutherland Cup Champs, freshly remodeled with fair weather friends at the trade deadline, pumped 56 shots on goal and bagged 5 power play goals in 9 chances en route to a 6-3 win. The Cyclones countered 27 shots on goal with 2 power play goals of their own and 1 at even strength but it was just not enough on this night of competition. The home side led 3-1 after 20 minutes and 4-2 after 40 minutes, using 2 goals early in the 1st period and another late in the 1st period to cast the die for the remainder of the match.
Pat Bell notched the 1st Cyclones goal with a shot from a bad angle inside the left wing faceoff circle that slipped through the legs. Brett Mc Guinness and David Dalby both assisted on the play. The Cyclones second goal at 4:28 of the 2nd period drew them to within one goal at 3-2 but that was as close as they would get. Kyle Ellis unleashed a shot from the right wing point through traffic – assisted by Jarrett Kup and Caleb Cameron. In the 3rd period, some hard work by the Cyclones drew 2 straight Elmira penalties and their work was rewarded with another power play goal at 8:40. David Dalby jammed in the 2nd rebound on a series of shots that was initiated by a Craig Johnson right wing point shot and then followed by a rebound try by Caleb Cameron before #9 swatted in the loose puck. Try as they might the Cyclones could not gain any more ground on the home side who were content to grind down the clock, dump and chase and suffocate the Cyclones attack.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Caleb Cameron #10 - Caleb scored 2 assists on the power play and continued his tireless work on the penalty kill and at even strength.
2 Points: Pat Bell #20 - Pat scored the Cyclones first goal, competed hard in the contest and prior to scoring his goal, he narrowly missed on a breakaway that was deflected away by the goaltender’s blocker.
1Point: Mike Pesendorfer #1 - Despite allowing 6 goals on 56 shots, The “Pez” made several highlight saves from point blank range, keeping the score in single digits and thereby earning himself recognition for his night’s efforts inside the blue paint.

Cyclones Skate to 8-3 Win Over Owen Sound
On Friday, January 13th / 2012 there was absolutely no hex on the Cyclones as they pasted the Owen Sound Greys by a lopsided 8 – 3 score. The Cyclones held leads of 3 - 1 after 20 minutes and 5-2 after 40 minutes before erupting for 3 goals in 61 seconds early in the 3rd period to put this contest out of reach. The game was a well rounded team effort as all skaters except 2 on the Cyclones game roster registered a point on the score sheet. On special teams, the “Men in Black” were 2 for 8 on the power play and 7 for 7 on the penalty kill. The only blight on the Cyclones ledger for the evening was a short - handed goal against that was surrendered in the final minute of play. Mike Pesendorfer turned aside 38 of the 41 shots that were directed his way; meanwhile his mates pelted two Owen Sound goaltenders with a combined total of 46 shots, chasing the 1st goalie after 20 minutes of play.
Newly minted Alternate Captain Caleb Cameron got the Cyclonic Storm of scoring fury started at 3:47 with Caleb Cameron grabbing the loose puck from behind the net and sweeping it in on a wrap-arou nd play. D-man Jordon Skerrett and forward Jeff Bauer helped set up the play. The score remained that way until 12:25 when some tape to tape to tape passing from newly acquired d-man Craig Johnson to newly minted Captain Brett McGuinness resulted in a shot on goal by David Dalby. From the hash marks, #9’s redirection of the crisp McGuinness pass drifted into the top of the cage through the baffled Owen Sound defenders and past a stunned Owen Sound goaltender. Owen Sound responded 18 seconds later when a scramble ensued in front of the Cyclones net and the puck squirted in off the stick of a Cyclones player. The home side got that one back at 18:16 when Chris Chapman jammed in a loose puck from the right wing side of the net. It was the finish of a seemingly broken play as Jeff Bauer had initially rushed into the zone along the left wing, gained position over the defender, over skated the puck, recovered, made a centering pass to Caleb Cameron, which was then redirected behind the net and out the other side to Chapman who was left unmarked beside the far post.
In the 2nd period, the Cyclones continued their offensive attack at 2:28 when Matt Halloran unleashed a screen shot from the left wing blueline after Caleb Cameron and Jeff Bauer teamed up to get the puck out from deep inside the Cyclones zone and quickly moved the puck deep inside the offensive zone. Later in the period some hard work and hustle by Dylan Sayles inside the Owen Sound zone resulted in a Greys penalty. On the immediate face off of the ensuing power play, it was a text book scoring play. Chris Chapman won the draw cleanly, moving the puck back to Kyle Ellis on the blue line, who then quickly stepped into a low, blistering shot from the right wing side that was redirected by Sayles who had anchored himself in front of the net, drifting high into the top corner. Excellent job Men!!! Owen Sound got one back at 11:51 and were threatening for more when the Cyclones took a pair of penalties to go 2 men short but the PK was up to the task and shut the Greys down.
In the 3rd period the Cyclones snowed the Greys under with 3 quick goals in 61 seconds. Jordon Skerrett and David Dalby teamed up at 5:55 on a play where defense turned to offense. Dalby blocked a shot in his own zone, Skerrett grabbed the loose puck and fed a pass to #9 up the left wing boards to clear the puck out of the Cyclones zone. #9 turned on the afterburners, roared up the left wing, left the Greys in his wake and ripped a high shot past the startled goaltender. The Greys had given up on the play as they were expecting an offside whistle but the play stood unchallenged. 2 goals by newly acquired forward Colten Pickett capped the Cyclones scoring. The first at 6:49 was on the power play by way of a redirection of a Kyle Ellis point shot. The second was 6 seconds later when Caleb Cameron and Jeff Bauer burst into the zone on the ensuing face off from center ice, where Pickett received a pass at the hash marks and buried the biscuit. Owen Sound rounded out the scoring with their “shorty” at 19;39 but it was too little and too late for the visitors.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Caleb Cameron #10 - Caleb scored 1 goal and assisted on 3 others and worked tirelessly on the penalty kill and at even strength, keeping the Owen Greys off balance for a good portion of the evening.
2 Points: Jeff Bauer #15 - Jeff had no goals but registered 4 assists on the night and was another Cyclonic offensive spark plug. Alongside Caleb, Jeff was another threat on the penalty kill and disrupted the Greys attack with his pick pocket defensive tactics.
1Point: Kyle Ellis #6 - Kyle had a steady game on the Cyclones blue line, chipping in 2 assists and carrying a decent share of ice time for the home side at even strength and on special teams.

Tough Start to 2012 With 7-2 Loss to Dutchmen
Happy New Year Cyclones Hockey Fans!!! On Friday, January 6th / 2012 the Cyclones hit the ice to resume the 2012 portion of their regular season. Visiting Memorial Arena was the 8th place the Kitchener Dutchmen. After 60 minutes the Cyclones were on the short end of a 7 -2 score. After playing it fairly close for the first 20 minutes, the Cyclones trailed by a 2-1 score but they were soon over run by three second period goals from the Dutchmen. The Cyclones managed one goal late in the 2nd period to draw to within a 5 – 2 margin but in the 3rd period 2 more goals by Kitchener and a meager 6 shots on goal by the Cyclones sealed the home squad’s fate for this game. The Dutchmen had 39 shots on goal vs. 27 for the Cyclones and the visitors were 2 for 7 on the power play and 6 for 6 on the penalty kill. The game featured one scrap early in the 3rd period as Pat Bell ushered in the New Year by ringing the bell of a Dutchmen player who had a rabid and over acute case of non-stop verbal diarrhea. Boys will be boys. Listowel goals were scored by David Dalby (assisted by Jordon Skerrett and Matt Halloran) and Graham Kitching (assisted by Ben Shelley and Chris Chapman).
The evening featured a Listowel Minor Hockey Tyke game during the 1st period intermission. Listowel Minor Hockey was the special guests of the Cyclones for the evening and United Communities Credit Union provided Game Night sponsorship and After The Storm sponsorship. The Cyclones thank both Listowel Minor Hockey and UCC for their participation in the game night events and for their continued support and co-operation. Also; do not forget to get your Cyclonic Big Draw Tickets – prize winners will be announced at the February 17th home game. Get your tickets now from any of the team executive, players, team volunteers or in the main lobby at Cyclones table during each home game.
Next Up will be a 7:30 p.m. Friday night home game against Owen Sound followed by a visit to Elmira for a 7:00 p.m. Sunday tilt against the Sugar Kings in another chapter of the Battle of Highway 86. The Cyclones will need to find their stride quickly and play their game at a higher level of intensity against both of these squads in order to generate any chances for successful results.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: David Dalby #9
2 Points: Jeff Bauer #15
1 Point: Chris Chapman #14
All 3 Cyclones players continued to give their best effort and will be ready to lead the charge next week as they and their mates get set to tackle both Owen Sound and Elmira.

Cyclones Win 2-1 Over Cullitons
On Friday, December 23rd / 2011 the Cyclones exacted some redemption and a small measure of revenge against the Cullitons by defeating their Perth County rivals by a 2-1 score. For the Cyclones and their fans it was a refreshing outcome given the results against the Cullitons from their last match 12 days previous. Furthermore, given the Cyclones fortunes in one goal games thus far this season, it was a welcome relief to be on the right side of the table this time around. The win was the 13th of the season for the Red, White and Black, keeping them in 6th place and 9 points ahead of Waterloo and it keeps the Cyclones 2 points away from 5th place Guelph, who hold 1 game in hand against the Cyclones. The Cyclones went 1 for 3 on the PP and 5 for 6 on the PK. Talon D’Orazio kicked aside 35 of 36 enemy shots in the blue paint to earn the win for the Cyclones; while his team mates generated 33 shots on goal at the opposition net.
The opposition controlled play in the 1st period as they outscored the home side 1-0 and outshot them by a 20-9 margin. In the 2nd period, the Cyclones turned this around by outshooting the opposition by a 17-6 margin and outscoring them by a 2-0 count. In the 3rd period, the Cyclones played a shut down defensive style as they held the opposition to 10 shots and threw 7 of their own in the other direction at the opposition zone. Select media reports suggest that neither Talon D’Orazio nor the Cyclones were fully challenged by the opposition. Regardless of that opinion, the Cyclones were full value for the win as they executed their game plan to near perfection. The Cyclones were able to eliminate frivolous and foolish penalties and they kept harmful and dangerous turnovers to a bare minimum. In addition to that they were able to provide a team effort for the entire game from every player in the lineup despite having a short bench due to injuries and absences. Give full credit to the Red, White and Black as they conclude the 2011 portion of the regular season campaign on a 2 game win streak.
The Cyclones suit up again on Friday, January 6th / 2012 as they take on the Kitchener Dutchmen at Memorial Arena, starting at 7:30 p.m.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Talon D’Orazio #31 - The Cyclones goaltender was in top form as he turned aside 35 of 36 shots including some sizzilating saves on tough shots in the 1st and 2nd periods that could have otherwise put the game out of reach. Once again Talon continued to battle and made the saves needed until his teammates could get the offence rolling.
2 Points: Sam Patterson #25 - The burly defenceman from London notched the Cyclones first goal of the game on the power play and assisted on the game winning goal. Sam continues to be a tower of power on the blue line for the Red, White and Black, getting the job done at both ends of the ice.
1 Point: Caleb Cameron #10 - The Sundridge native scored the game winner when Sam Patterson fed him a break out pass to the left wing side of the neutral zone. Using his blazing speed, Caleb left the opposition defenders trapped in his wake as he roared past them and onto the goal untouched. Without breaking stride he flipped the puck high over the sprawling goaltender’s pads to bulge the twine. Caleb does not lead the team in scoring but he certainly provides leadership with the effort & hustle that he puts forth in each game.
Have a Cyclonic New Year!!! See You in 2012!!! Bleed Red, White and Black!!! Go Cyclones!!!
Cyclones Win Big With 8-1 Score Over Siskins
On Sunday, December 18th/2011, the Cyclones regrouped from a tough loss on Friday and skated to an 8-1 Win over the Siskins. This was a team effort and with the effort came the goals. Of course, having Talon stop all but 1 shot fired his way was a big part of the win.
The line of Catto, Cameron, and Bauer led the charge with 11 points with Caleb Cameron earning a hat trick and Catto and Bauer each with 4 points.
With our roving reporter currently scouting hockey leagues in the North Eastern U.S, I won't be giving you the in depth reporting that you are used to. I will however say that as a team, the Cyclones put it together yesterday. They scored 3 goals in a 5 minute span in the 1st period and did not look back.
They added 4 more in the 2nd period and 1 more in the 3rd. Talon D'orazio had his fair share of shots but was up to the task as he stopped 31 of 32 fired at him.
I must add that as with most levels of hockey, most of the commentary and credit is given to point production and the goaltending. I think it should be mentioned that the Cyclone defence typically is very consistent and put in very solid effort game in and game out. This game was no different and with an always feisty Siskin attack, can be a challenge.
Matt Halloran who has been a steady defensive force all season long, scored his first Cyclone goal and added an assist. Matt, along with Ellis, Thompson, Skerrett, Kup, and Patterson were all very big parts to this win.
Without Dean to pick the 3 stars, I have struggled with the selection committee but here it is:
The Molson 3 Star Performers:
1st Stars- Caleb Cameron-3 goals, Brett Catto- 1 g and 3 a, Jeff Bauer-1 g and 3 a, Talon D'orazio-awesome
2nd Stars- Brett McGuinness- 1 g and 2 a, David Dalby- 3 a
3rd Star- Matt Halloran- 1st Cyclone g and 1 a.
Cyclones Lose 6-1 To Golden Eagles
On Friday, December 16th/2011 the visiting Golden Eagles scored 2 goals in each period to take home a 6-1 Win. The Cyclones started this game very strong and carried the play for the first 7 or 8 minutes. After that, Brantford took over and cruised to the victory.
Michael Pesendorfer made a lot of great saves in the 1st period but Brantford managed to score 2 before the end of 20 minutes.
What was probably the oddest situation in the game was when Dylan Sayles was given a nasty hit from behind in a very dangerous position as he was about 3 feet from the boards. Most players would have gone through the acting motions and stayed down in order to draw a bigger penalty. Dylan is not that type of player and imediately went after his attacker. However, because many calls are based on the result and not the hit, each player was given 2 minutes. A bit of a travesty when one considers the potential result of hits such as that.
We are thankful that Dylan was not hurt and have a ton of respect for him not simply lying on the ice as many others would have. I was very disappointed in how the calls played out and even though a 2nd Golden Eagle came into the scrum, no Cyclone Power Play. With the Cyclone Power Play at 0 for 5 on the night, the outcome of the game may not have been different but this seemed to be when the momentum of the game changed.
The 2nd period did not start the way the Cyclones had hoped as Brantford scored just 20 seconds in. With the score at 4-0, Jeff Bauer put in his usual solid effort and got the Cyclones on the score board. This would be the first and only Cyclone goal in the game but did show the guys what hard work and team work can do.
Full credit goes to Brantford as they played with a lot of grit, speed, and teamwork.
The Molson 3 Star Performers:
1st Star-Jeff Bauer- 3 pts- Jeff gave his usual 100% effort and was the lone Cyclone scorer in this game.
2nd Star- Brett McGuinness-2 pts- Brett is another Cyclone who continually gives everything he's got. Although he was kept off the scoresheet, he made some great rushes and battled hard to create chances
3rd Star- Dylan Sayles- for playing with Cyclonic grit every time he hit the ice. Obviously frustrated after the nasty hit he took, Dylan continued to give his all and finish all checks.
Congratulations to Noel Laporte from Moorefield who won $1000 in the BASF Chemical Shoot Out. Also a big thank you to BASF Chemical for sponsoring the game and having this awesome shootout.
****The Cyclone Pot Luck Christmas Dinner will not take place on Friday Dec. 23rd. It seems there are many conflicts with this date so we will hopefully reschedule another event in 2012. Our usual After The Storm will still be held after the game on Friday. See you there.
the Cyclones now travel to Waterloo on Sunday for a 1:30 game vs the Siskins. The Cyclones look to come out with a full 60 minute effort to come out with a better result than last weeks 5-4 loss to Waterloo. Take the drive to Waterloo and cheer on the Cyclones Go Cyclones Go! Bleed Red White and Black!!Cullitons Dominate Cycs With 9-1 Win
On Sunday, December 11th / 2011 the Cyclones played a decent opening 20 minutes of hockey against the 1st place Cullitons, scoring first with a Blake Thompson power play goal at 10:55 – assisted by Brett Catto and Jeff Bauer. It was a text book play on how to win an offensive zone faceoff, gain control of the puck and execute the scoring play from inside the blueline. After 20 minutes the game was tied 1-1and the host team held a 20-16 shots on goal advantage. Over the final 40 minutes of play the Cyclones were bombarded with 8 goals on 40 shots and lost by a 9-1 score. The final 40 minutes of play was littered with penalties as the Cyclones surrendered 3 PP goals in the 2nd period and 1 in the 3rd period. As the game wore on, it was evident that frustration had set in especially after one goal was scored after the puck went bouncing off sticks and skates before crossing the line in a crazy ping pong styled scoring play.
On Friday, December 16th, the Brantford Golden Eagles fly into Memorial Arena for a 7:30 p.m. star t. On Sunday, December 18th the Cyclones visit the Rec Complex in Waterloo for a 1:30 p.m. match against the Siskins. The 2011 portion of the regular season winds up on Friday, December 23rd with a 7:30 p.m. home game against the Cullitons; followed by the annual Cyclones potluck Christmas Dinner held upstairs in the Cyclones Storm Shelter. Bring some treats and good eats and enjoy the fun!!!
There are better days ahead for the Cyclones, so do not lose heart and let’s give these young men our full support. Bleed Red, White and Black!!! Go Cyclones!!!
Hurricanes Take 5-4 Win Over Cyclones
On Saturday, December 10th / 2011 the Cyclones staked themselves to a 4-1 lead at the 13:50 mark of the 2nd period but a short bench and some inopportune penalties set the stage for a 4 goal comeback surge by the host Guelph Hurricanes squad. A strong 4 for 7 power play effort was offset by 3 for 10 power play effort by the Hurricanes who managed 31 shots on goal at Talon D’Orazio. The Cyclones made the most of their 27 shots on goal but could not keep a lid on the opposition scoring to preserve the win.
Guelph native Ben Shelley got the Cyclones scoring started at exactly 10 minutes into the 1st period – Kyle Ellis and Dylan Sayles assisted. Guelph tied things at 1’s at 14:41 followed by Caleb Cameron from David Dalby and Graham Kitching at 18:38. Captain Brett Catto scored twice in the second period – the first at 12:05 from Blake Thompson and Jeff Bauer; and then the same trio hooked up again at 13:54. The Hurricanes scored at 17:50 to make it a 4-2 score after 40 minutes of play. In the 3rd period, the wheels on the Cyclones bus went flat as Guelph scored 3 more times to cement the come from behind win and get a leg up on the Cyclones for 5th place. Try as they might, the Red, White and Black cannot seem to catch much of a break so far this season but this reporter is certain that the Cyclones will continue to battle hard – game in and game out.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Brett Catto #17 - The Cyclones Captain scored twice for his team in this contest. Normally known as being a set up man, Brett was on the receiving end of the passing plays this evening.
2 Points: Jeff Bauer #15 - The forward from Lambeth registered 2 assists and continues to provide a steady offensive effort.
1 Point: Ben Shelley #28 - The Guelph native notched the Cyclones first goal of the game to help his team get the game on the proper footing.
Siskins Edge Cyclones 4-3
On Friday, December 9th / 2011 the Cyclones fell behind early in the 1st period by a 2-0 count and did not recover as they dropped a 4-3 decision to the Waterloo Siskins. The Cyclones came within 1 in the second period with a Blake Thompson power play goal at 7:13 (assists to Sam Patterson and Caleb Cameron) but a penalty at the midway point of the 2nd period disrupted the momentum that was starting to mount in the Cyclones favour. The score stayed 2-1 until 12:40 of the 3rd period of play when Waterloo’s snipers bagged a 4 on 4 goal after applying the fore check and creating a turnover inside the offensive zone. The Cyclones continued to battle, as Jeff Bauer scored on the power play at 17:59 with goaltender Talon D’Orazio on the bench in favour of an extra attacker – David Dalby and Brett Catto assisted on the scoring play. Waterloo responded with an empty net goal at 18:41 when the Cyclones coughed the puck up at the Siskins blueline. Down by 2, the Cyclones pulled the goaltender again and scored once more at 19:43 – Pat Bell from Kyle Ellis and Jarrett Kup. The final 17 seconds was a flurry of action but the Cyclones could not score the equalizer and force an overtime session. The Cyclones outshot the Siskins by a 46 – 33 count including a 23 to 11 margin in the final 20 minutes of play. The Men in Black were 2 for 5 on the power play and a perfect 5 for 5 on the penalty kill. Consistent play for a full 60 minutes has been a rare achievement for the team and they will look to rebound on Saturday night in Guelph as they continue to battle the Hurricanes for 5th place in the GOJHL Midwest Division.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Talon D’Orazio #31 - The native of Barrie entered the game at 13:03 of the 1st period in relief of Michael Pesendorfer and turned aside 23 of 24 shots, including crucial saves on odd man rushes in the 2nd period, thus giving the Cyclones enough of s chance to mount a comeback attempt.
2 Points: Jeff Bauer #15 - The forward from Lambeth scored once and generated several other prime scoring chances for the home side and played a vital role on the penalty kill also.
1 Point: David Dalby #9 - The Stratford forward assisted once and was another vital member of the penalty kill and the offensive effort for the Cyclones.
Cyclones 5-4 Victors Over Dutchmen
On Sunday, December 4th / 2011 the Cyclones made it a 2 for 2 winning weekend, defeating Kitchener by a 5-4 score on the expansive and frosty surfaces of the Kinsmen Arena in Kitchener. The Cyclones built an early 3-1 lead after 20 minutes, held a 5-3 advantage after 40 minutes and survived the 3rd period to emerge with their 11th win of the season. This puts the Cyclones even with 5th place Guelph with 25 points but Guelph continues to hold 5th place by virtue of their 12 wins thus far in the regular season campaign.
The Cyclones continued to get an all around effort from their roster as 9 players made the score sheet and Mike Pesendorfer got the job done, turning aside 21 of 25 shots. The Red, White and black could not take advantage on their power play, going 0 for 9 and had their hands full on the penalty kill, allowing 3 on 7 chances. The key to the win was a good opening 20 minutes followed by some good shut down defence in the final 20 minutes of the game.
Blake Thompson got the puck bouncing with his 4th goal of the season at 16 seconds from the opening faceoff. A generous rebound was scooped up and a hard low shot from atop the circles found its way through traffic and hit the twine in fine style. David Dalby and Brett McGuinness drew the assists on that play. Kitchener evened things up on a 5 on 3 PP at 10:42 with a big rebound and too much time and space to place the equalizer. The Cyclones closed out the period with 2 important goals. The first was at 17:09 when Pat Bell created a turnover inside the Kitchener line on the left wing side of the ice, and then he made a pass to Chris Chapman who directed a low shot at the net which in turn was redirected in front by Jarret Kup for the Cyclonic finish. A nice goal and a candidate for highlight of the night!!! The Cyclones next goal was scored at 19:45 and was equally impressive. This time it was David Dalby who trapped the puck inside the line along the right wing boards, worked it over to Jeff Bauer who tagged a pass onto the tape of Caleb Cameron who blazed in on goal and roofed a high shot out of the reach of the blocker. Sweet….and another candidate for highlight of the night!!!
Inside the 1st minute of play in the 2nd period, Kitchener drew within one at even strength with a sneaky play that Pesendorfer had no chance on stopping. Pesendorfer redeemed himself with two big saves from point blank range using his left pad and left toe to prevent the tying goal. A strong penalty kill midway through the period helped set up the 4th goal. Seconds after the penalty expired the Cyclones pounced with a quick transition play. An alert Blake Thompson stretched a smart tape to tape pass onto the blade of the stick of Caleb Cameron who swiftly split the Kitchener d-men and beat the goaltender 5-hole with the d-men desperately chopping at him from behind. That goal arrived at 13:11 and it was followed by another at16:32. This time Kyle Elis trapped a clearing attempt inside the blue line, fed a cross ice pass to blue line partner Jarret Kup at the left point who made a nice crisp pass to Dylan Sayles at the right half boards. Dylan unloaded a one- time shot which was in turn was redirected Chris Chapman past a completely fooled goaltender. That was indeed the Cyclonic highlight of the night as the Cyclones fans in attendance roared with their approval. To make things interesting the Cyclones surrendered two more power play goals – one at 18:47 of period #2 and the last one at 55 seconds of the 3rd period. The Cyclones escaped 2 more short handed situations and survived a last minute charge by the Dutchmen in order to prevail with the win.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Caleb Cameron #10 - The native of sunny Sundridge scored goals 15 and 16 of the season as he sparked the Cyclones scoring attack for this game with a Cyclonic blend of speed, skill and science.
2 Points: Blake Thompson #4 - The hometown blueliner scored once and assisted once and had steady performance against a pesky Kitchener squad to help his team to earn the win.
1 Point: Jarret Kup #2, David Dalby #9, and Chris Chapman #14 - It is a good problem to have when there are too many good game performances to select from; so why not give credit where credit is due? Jarret had 1 G & 1A, David chipped in with 2A & Chris had 1A and scored the game winning goal. Great Work Men!
The Cyclones have another action packed weekend coming up, starting at home on Friday night against Waterloo. Saturday night features an all important game in Guelph as 5th place is on the line. Sunday night will be an interesting encounter in Stratford against the first place Cullitons. The start time for all games is 7:30 p.m. Grab your coat, hat and favorite blanket – make your way to the rink and cheer on the Cyclones. Bleed Red, White and Black!!! Go Cyclones!!!
Cyclones Earn 6-4 Win Over SugarKings
On Friday, December 2nd / 2011 the Cyclones started the new month right by putting their best skate forward and defeating Highway 86 rivals Elmira by a 6 – 4 score. It was another entertaining match between these long time rivals – each team scored twice on the power play (the home side was 2 for 11, the visitors 2 for 5) and each team tallied once while shorthanded. In the blue paint, the Cyclones Mike Pesendorfer was peppered with 41 shots while his teammates made the most of their chances on 29 shots including an empty netter to clinch the win with 37 ticks left on the clock.
For the Cyclones part it was a full team effort as 11 players hit the score sheet and everyone played a part to fend off the visitors and secure the team’s 10th win of the season. Captain Brett Catto was up to his usual stuff with 3 assists, Sniper David Dalby led marksmen with 2 goals, Caleb Cameron and Jeff Bauer had 1 goal and 1assist each, Dylan Sayles and Sam Patterson had 1 goal each, Kyle Ellis had 2 helpers, while single assists were tallied by Jarrett Kup, Brett McGuinness, Pat Bell and new forward Graham Kitching. Graham had an interesting week of sorts, starting out on the Kitchener Dutchmen roster, and then moving to Waterloo for 2 games before landing in the land of the Red, White and Black. Welcome aboard Graham.
Great job men. Keep up the hard work and efforts. After a tough stretch of games in recent weeks, the desired outcomes are starting to appear. A continuous and dedicated effort will be needed the rest of the way as there are no easy games in this league and no quarter is given by the opposing teams.
A special and Cyclonic thank you to Listowel Central Public School for their participation in the opening of the game with their choir’s live rendition of “O Canada” and for their support of the team during the game.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Mike Pesendorfer #1 - The native of Novi, Michigan kicked out 37 of 41 shots to backstop the Cyclones for a big Friday night win in front of the home crowd. “Pez for Prez in 2012!!!”
2 Points: Brett Catto #17 - The Cyclones Captain continues to be the instigator of good things, this time notching 3 assists. His first was scored on the power play, his second was while shorthanded and his third was at even strength on the empty net goal that clinched the final outcome.
1 Point: David Dalby #9 - David scored 2 more big goals and continues to inject an infusion of Cyclonic energy and enthusiasm into the roster of the Red, White and Black.
The Cyclones next game is Sunday when they travel to Kitchener for a 3:30 p.m. match at the Kinsmen Arena complex. Don’t miss the action…cheer on the Cyclones. Bleed Red, White and Black!!!
Cyclones Win 5-3 Over Grey's
On Sunday, November 27th / 2011 the Cyclones travelled north along Highway 6 to Owen Sound for a match against the Greys at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Arena. After 60 minutes of play the Cyclones emerged victorious by a 5 – 3 score. The keys to the Cyclones victory were effective special teams play – 1 for 3 on the power play and a pivotal 5 for 6 performance on the penalty kill, with 10 shot blocks for good measure. The Cyclones scored the all important 1st goal of the game at 3:59 of the opening 20 minutes – Bauer from Captain Brett Catto and blueliner Blake Thompson. Owen Sound grabbed the lead with 2 even strength goals in a 2 ½ minute span but the Cyclones countered with 2 goals of their own in under 4 minutes to close out the 1st period. Brett Catto and Jarrett Kup set up Caleb Cameron for a power play strike at 16:02 followed by Caleb Cameron and Jeff Bauer setting up Brett Catto with 4 seconds left in the period. In the second period the Cyclones notched the only goal as David Dalby buried an unassisted marker at 11:23. In the third period, forward Chris Chapman scored his first goal as a Cyclones player at 4:54, with assists from Dylan Sayles and Steve Hutchinson. Great Work Men!!! Owen Sound scored once more on the power play at 16:44 but the Cyclones and goaltender Mike “Pez” Pesendorfer shut the door for the rest of the way to seal the win.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Brett Catto #17 - The Cyclones Captain led the charge for the Men in Black with 1 goal and 2 assists. Brett has found his stride after sitting out the start of the season due to injury and has injected the Cyclones with additional power and energy.
2 Points: David Dalby #9 - David scored one goal and also injected an infusion of Cyclonic energy and enthusiasm into the match for the Red, White and Black.
1 Point: Jeff Bauer #15 - Jeff put forth another steady and strong performance with 1 goal and 1 assist using his speed, skill and Cyclonic hockey savvy to contribute to the Cyclones victory.
Overall the Cyclones have had a very productive and uplifting weekend, taking 2 wins and 4 points; and coming very close to taking 1 or 2 more points. The Cyclones closed out the weekend and the month of November on a high note, and they currently sit in 6th place with 21 points, trailing Guelph by 4 points but they have 1 game in hand on the Hurricanes. Next weekend the Cyclones battle Elmira on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday they travel to Kitchener for a 3:30 p.m. match at the Kinsmen Arena complex. This kicks off a very busy and challenging 8 game schedule for the Cyclones in the month of December. Don’t forget to purchase your “CYCLONES BIG DRAW” fundraiser tickets – there are 7 awesome prizes to be won. Don’t miss the action…cheer on the Cyclones. Bleed Red, White and Black!!!
Cyclones Battle Hard But Come Up Short In 2-1 Loss to Brantford
On Saturday, November 26th / 2011 the Cyclones travelled south to Brantford to take on the Golden Eagles where the home side emerged with a slim 2-1 victory. The Cyclones hustled and worked hard, keeping step with their opponents but could not find enough speed to attack the net and generate enough scoring chances from within the hash marks. The defensive effort was strong with Talon D’Orazio turning aside 43 of 45 shots on goal, including a point blank save on a shorthanded breakaway. The Cyclones blue liners put forth a strong and stingy effort as they battled against a shifty and devious Brantford offensive force. The Cyclones only goal was scored on the power play at 17:07 of the 1st period. Sam Paterson drifted a shot on goal from the blue line, Pat Bell whacked at the rebound and David Dalby buried the 2nd rebound into the twine. Brantford tied the game 34 seconds later with an even strength goal and then scored the eventual game winner on the power play at 8:10 of the 2nd period. In the 3rd period, the Cyclones tried some last minute heroics with an extra attacker on the ice and the net empty but their best efforts came to no avail. Overall this game was a much improved effort over the Cyclones last visit to Brantford.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Talon D’Orazio #31 - The Barrie native was solid for his 3rd game in a row; frustrating the Brantford snipers and stonewalling them at close range, making 43 saves on 45 shots on goal.
2 Points: The rest of the Cyclones line up - The Red, White and Black gave a gutsy and persistent effort despite having a shortened bench throughout the match. Even in the finals seconds the team was battling hard, even denying a clear cut Brantford scoring chance at the empty net.
The Cyclones will finish their 3 game weekend with an early Sunday 2:30 p.m. start at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Complex in Owen Sound. The schedule makers have evened up the odds for the Cyclones as the Greys were playing up the 403 in Stoney Creek; so both teams will have a long bus trip ahead of them before Sunday’s game. Bleed Red, White and Black!!! Go Cycs Go!!!
Cyclones Back in The Win Column With 4-0 Win Over Cambridge
Wow!! To quote the infamous lyrics of singer /songwriter George Thorogood “You should have heard just what I seen” On Friday, November 25th / 2011 the Cyclones got the upper hand on the Cambridge Winterhawks by a score of 4 – 0; as the on ice officials lowered the boom on Cambridge, assessing them with 84 minutes of penalties including the game ejection of 4 players for foul play as well as the ejection of the Cambridge coach early in the 3rd period. Official scorer Rick Kelly came perilously close to running out of ink and paper to record the infractions while his associate, official time keeper Mark Kennedy, was busier than an air traffic control tower commander as he marshaled the seemingly unending flow of players in and out of the Cambridge penalty box.
The Cyclones took full and large advantage of the situation by pounding the Cambridge net with 45 shots and by scoring 3 times on 18 power chances. Meanwhile at the other end of the rink, the defence shut the door on the Winterhawks as newly acquired goaltender Talon D’Orazio made 24 saves during the 60 minute contest at Memorial Arena. For the Red, White and Black it was their first home ice win for almost a month as they headed into the contest one point ahead of 7th place Waterloo and trailed 5th place Guelph by 6 points with 3 games in hand on the Hurricanes. For Cyclones fans it was welcome change of scenery as their team redeemed themselves after suffering a home ice overtime loss against Cambridge last month.
Pat Bell got things rolling in the right direction 48 seconds after the opening faceoff. After grabbing a neutral zone turnover, Sam Paterson and Blake Thompson worked the puck quickly over to the right side, where the Grand Valley native tore down the wing, drove hard to the net with gusto and slipped it home. The first Cyclones power play goal was scored at 10:21 of the 1st period on a broken play. What looked to be a Cambridge shorthanded attack was quickly foiled by the Cyclones in the neutral zone as the puck was moved smartly the opposite way. Sam Patterson and Caleb Cameron sprung Captain Brett Catto loose along the right wing, where the Kincardine native had time and space to hammer home a hard and low drive from the upper right wing faceoff circle.
In the second period, the Cyclones power play struck again at 17:40 as Kyle Ellis fed a cross ice pass to Catto at the left side, who then fed a tape-to-tape pass to Caleb Cameron for the nifty redirection and a 3-0 lead. Cyclonic Work Men!!! In the third period the wheels fell off for Cambridge as their bench and their supporters went off the deep end in a collective spaz attack, as the penalty parade started 34 seconds after the start of the final stanza of play. The Cyclones 4th goal and final power play strike was scored at 3:41 as Catto and Blake Thompson were the architects of the play and Jeff Bauer was the finisher on another tape-to-tape-to-tape scoring effort. From that point on the Cyclones weathered the onslaught of Cambridge misbehaving and misdemeanors; shutting the door and securing Talon D’Orazio’s first win (and shut out) as a Cyclones player. Great Job Men!!! To quote George Thorogood once more “Oh how sweet it is!!!”
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Talon D’Orazio #31 - The Barrie native was solid for his 2nd game in a row; frustrating the Cambridge shooters during the match, making 24 saves for his first shutout of the season.
2 Points: Brett Catto #17 - The Kincardine forward had 1 goal and 2 assists and from an offence stand point, he was “the straw that stirred the drink” for the Cyclones in this game.
1 Point: Caleb Cameron #10 - The forward from sunny Sundridge registered 1 goal and 1 assist and was a consistent performer for his team for a full 60 minutes.
This weekend the Cyclones have a full slate of games to finish out the month of November. The Cyclones will encounter the seriously professional styling of the Brantford Golden Eagles at the Gretzky rink on Saturday at 7:30; followed by an early Sunday 2:30 p.m. start at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Complex in Owen Sound. Needless to say, the Red, White and Black have their work cut out for them this weekend. Bleed Red, White and Black!!! Go Cycs Go!!!
Canadians Over Cyclones 4-2
On Sunday, November 20th / 2011 the Cyclones battled hard for 60 minutes against the Welland Junior Canadians but fell short by a 4-2 score. Both teams battled back and forth in a closely fought contest but the home side held onto a 3-1 lead and iced the game with an empty net goal with 6 seconds left on the clock. The Cyclones held a 40 to 36 shots on goal advantage but could not find enough ways to finish off their shots inside of the hash marks. The Men in Black were limited to a miniscule 3 power plays and could not take advantage of any of those chances; meanwhile they shut out the home side on all 8 of their power play opportunities.
Welland opened the scoring at 6:52 of the opening period with an even strength goal after their right defenceman pinched in at the blue line to maintain the zone. After some rapidly executed text book tic tac toe passing the puck was in the net. The Cyclones had various scoring chances develop in the period but could not pull the trigger on a quality shot. Cyclones goaltender Talon D’Orazio made the save of the game in the final minute of the opening 20 when he lunged across his goal line to deny a certain goal from the Welland forward parked on the doorstep of the net. WOW !!!!!
In the 2nd 20 minute set, Welland began applying the body to the Cyclones who did not back down and were not intimidated by the physical play of the home side. Welland upped their lead by 2 at 5:43 with another even strength marker but the Cyclones countered with a goal of their own at 8:57. David Dalby gets credit for the unofficial assist as he blocked a clearing attempt with his skate inside the Welland blue line. Shifty and speedy Caleb Cameron pounced on the loose puck and darted in on goal with an attempt to fake out the goaltender with a deke. That attempt did not succeed but it did put the goaltender down and out. Caleb gave it a second effort as he regained his balance and wrapped around behind the net, emerging on the left wing side and stuffing it through the goaltender who stretched across in a desperately frantic attempt cover his tracks. The Cyclones continued to press for a tying goal as Jeff Bauer was stopped by the pads on a point blank shot and Brett Mc Guinness rattled a rising left wing shot off of the far post. Meanwhile at the Cyclones end, Talon D’Orazio was stopping everything in sight to keep his team in the game; including a sick blocker save on the trailing forward 3rd who was cruising in from the high slot.
In the 3rd period Welland’s fore checking produced their 3rd goal when a failed clearing attempt by the Cyclones was cycled deep and behind the net and from there it was quickly centered out front for the score from close range. The Cyclones continued to battle as Bauer, Dalby, Hutchison and Cameron all had chances. At 9:27 the Cyclones pulled to within 1 when Dylan Sayles jammed / bulldozed the puck over the line after the scrambly goal crease play was started by Pat Bell and Tanner Simpson. Dylan Sayles had another chance but could not corral a rebound in the 14th minute. A late power play provided a 3 on 2 rush but the Cyclones 3rd man into the play had the puck hop off of his stick before a shot could be attempted. Such were the Cyclones fortunes for this match. The cyclones continued to press including a 6 on 5 attack with the net empty but the home side iced the game with 6 ticks left on the clock. There is no question that the effort was certainly there from start to finish, just not enough good fortune around the opposition net.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Talon D’Orazio #31 - The Barrie native was sensational making 32 saves on 35 shots including several from close range; keeping his mates in the game for the entire 60 minutes of play.
2 Points: Caleb Cameron #10 - Caleb scored the 1st Cyclones goal using his speed and hustle and was using those same talents to the best of his ability all game long.
1 Point: Dylan Sayles #11 - Dylan scored the other Cyclones goal and was a steady presence inside the Welland zone, either with scoring chances or by meting out some crunching body checks of his own.
This weekend the Cyclones have a full slate of 3 games to finish out the month of November. The action starts on Friday at 7:30 p.m. with a home game against Cambridge, followed by the professional styling of the Brantford Golden Eagles at the Gretzky rink on Saturday at 7:30; and wrapped up by a 2:30 p.m. start at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Complex in Owen Sound. Needless to say, the Red, White and Black have their work cut out for them this weekend. Bleed Red, White and Black!!! Go Cycs Go!!!
Sarnia Skates to 9-3 Win Over Cyclones
On Friday, November 18th / 2011 the Cyclones were crushed 9 – 3 by the Sarnia Legionnaires in an interlocking Conference game at Memorial Arena. Clad in their black uniforms Sarnia’s “Legion of Doom” demonstrated their supreme hockey skills and look very much like a force to be reckoned with in the GOJHL Western Conference. Sarnia’s crew let their play do the talking - fast skating, quick transition, hard hitting, driving to the net with speed, precision shooting; with steady defensive play and goaltending added into the mix. If you will….call it hockey the way it is meant to be played. The upside is that with all of this industrious activity going on, there is really no time left for the chirping and the cheap stuff that we have been accustomed to witnessing from other Cyclones adversaries this season. The downside is that if your team cannot keep up with Sarnia’s intensity level and the rapid fire pace of play, then it becomes a long night in a hurry.
The Cyclones were outshot 38 – 29 by their guests, went 0 for 6 on the power play and 1 for 2 on the penalty kill. The home side was the first to get on the board at 6:26 of the 1st period. Blueliner Jordan Skerrett made a crisp first pass out of the zone up the left side to Jeff Bauer who streaked into the zone before making a cross ice feed to Brett Catto. The Cyclones Captain redirected the puck with a backhand shot that squirted through the pads of Sean Parker and into the cage. Sarnia countered with 2 goals – the first one on the power play at 10:32 and the other at 15:25 which resulted after a Cyclones defensive turnover deep in their own zone.
5 Sarnia goals in the second period sunk the Cyclones ship who managed only one goal in reply. The turning point in the 2nd period was an early 2 goal outburst in less than two minutes; all of which transpired very shortly after the Cyclones had peppered the Sarnia net with a brief barrage of power play chances - including some shots off of the iron and a pair off the blocker and glove of Sarnia goaltender Sean Parker.
The Cyclones goal came from Ben Shelley who scored on a “follow - the - bouncing - puck” type of play that was set up by Steve Hutchison and Chris Chapman; making it a 7-2 Sarnia lead after 40 minutes of play. In the 3rd period the Legionnaires piled on 2 more while Cyclones Captain Brett Catto snapped home a high rising shot over the glove of Parker to round out the game scoring summary. Caleb Cameron and Jarrett Kup assisted on that play.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Brett Catto #17 - The Kincardine native led the team scoring in this game with 2 goals for the Red, White and Black. After 8 games played, Brett has collected 7 goals and 4 assists so far.
2 Points: Jeff Bauer #15 - One assist on the evening and a ton of hustle and hard work secure second place honors for the sophomore forward from Lambeth. Jeff currently leads the team in scoring with 27 points.
1 Point: Caleb Cameron #10 - The sophomore forward from Sundridge also had one assist and was another Cyclonic bundle of energy on the ice for the home squad in this match. Caleb is second in team scoring with 21 points.
On Sunday, the Cyclones bus heads southeast to Welland for a 7:00 p.m. match against the Junior Canadians of the Golden Horseshoe Conference. Welland’s record stands at 10 wins and 12 losses but they are always a hard working team with enough skill and grit to cause a problem to an unsuspecting opponent. These interlocking conference games will continue to be a stern test indeed for this young Cyclones hockey team.
Bleed Red, White and Black!!! Go Cycs Go!!!
Brantford Win 5-3 Over Cyclones
On Friday, November 11th / 2011 the Cyclones squared off against the 3rd place Brantford Golden Eagles. After a hard fought 60 minute contest it was the visiting squad who emerged victorious with a 5 – 3 win. Brantford continued to demonstrate their aggressive and physical style of play but the Cyclones would not be intimidated by such tactics and theatrics. Both teams were battling toe to toe for over 30 minutes of play, deadlocked at 3 goals apiece before Brantford pulled ahead at 11:45 with their only even strength goal of the night. At 16:27 of the 2nd period, a nasty blindside hit resulted in a 5 minute major penalty and an extended power play for the Cyclones. Just under 2 minutes into the man advantage the Cyclones fortunes fizzled in rapid fire succession as they took 2 minor penalties within 40 seconds. This turn of events developed into a 4 on 3 power play for Brantford; which in turn produced the eventual insurance marker at 18:54.
The Cyclones were 0 for 7 on the PP and 5 for 9 on the PK as the Eagles used their man advantage opportunities with surgical precision. The Cyclones held a 46 to 39 shots on goal advantage and were able to crack the back of the net 3 times with a shorthanded marker plus 2 more at even strength. Jeff Bauer scored the first Cyclones tally shorthanded at 9:56 of the 1st period after winning the foot race to a clearing pass that was made by Brett Catto from behind his own icing line. #15 streaked in and unloaded a hard backhand shot that went airborne and was batted into the net by a Brantford defender who was struggling to get back into the play. Cyclones goal #2 was a splendid display of tic tac toe passing as Jeff Bauer and Brett Catto worked the puck deep on the rush and moved it quickly around the crease before Caleb Cameron streaked into the hash marks and fired it “roof daddy” into the top of the cage. Jarrett Kup rounded out the scoring for the Cyclones at 5:37 of the 2nd period on a fine looking rush down the left wing side before making a 2nd effort to jam it home on the rebound. Chris Chapman and Ben Shelley drew the assist on that play, helping #8 to set up his first Jr. B goal. Starting in goal for the Cyclones was newly acquired Talon D’Orazio who made his first start in a Cyclones uniform. Talon has not seen much ice time yet this season, and all things considered he fared fairly well playing against his former team. Welcome aboard to the Cyclones Talon.
This being November11th, prior to the start of the game a lone piper led a colour guard procession onto centre ice in advance of the veterans who were escorted in as part of the Cyclones Remembrance Day tribute to our local veterans and their comrades in arms. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill probably summed it up best following the Battle of Britain when he said “In the field of human conflict, never has so much been owed by so many to so few”. The same can be said regarding all of our armed forces personnel, be it in WW1, WW2, the Korean War, or in any theatre of operations thereafter, up to and including the war in Afghanistan. Lest We Forget
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Jeff Bauer #15 - Jeff scored once and assisted on another to help lead the Cyclones offence. Jeff is a consistent performer for the Red, White and Black.
2 Points: Brett Catto #17- Brett is another consistent performer who is typically found setting up some good scoring plays. Tonight he had 2 assists and played with his usual style of pesky tenacity.
1 Point: Jarrett Kup #8 - Jarrett registered his first goal as a member of the Cyclones and he is usually found in the thick of things while patrolling the defensive zone.
Next up, the team is back in Listowel for a Friday night tilt at 7:30 against the Sarnia Legionnaires of the Western Conference. On Sunday, the Cyclones bus heads southeast to Welland for a 7:00 p.m. match against the Junior Canadians of the Golden Horseshoe Conference. At 13 wins and 6 losses Sarnia is having a better than average start to their season. Welland’s record stands at 10 wins and 12 losses but they are always a hard working team with enough skill and grit to cause a problem to an unsuspecting opponent. These interlocking conference games will be a stern test indeed for this young Cyclones hockey team.

Cyclones Battle Till The End but Lose 5-4
After giving up 3 goals in the first 15 minutes, the Cyclones continued to battle but came up short in the 5-4 loss to Owen Sound.
With our Roving Reporter still serving a self imposed "Censorship" from the game, we are lacking for more of a write up. Come back soon Dean!!
Molson 3 Stars:
1- Kyle Ellis
2- David Dalby
3- Steve Hutchinson.
Pesendorfer Was Brilliant In 2-1 Win Over SugarKings
After a tough loss on Friday night, the Cyclones travelled to Elmira to take on the high flying SugarKings on Sunday. Although outshot, the Cyclones battled hard to earn the 2-1 Victory
Although Elmira really don't need much help from the officials, they were given 4 straight power plays to begin the 1st period. That sure made things tough for the Cyclones but they battled hard and were able to kill off all 4. Michael Pesendorfer was up to the task and stopped all shots fired his way.
Shortly after killing off the 4 penalties, the Cycs found themselves down 1-0 as the period was winding down. Not long after that, Jeff Bauer finished off a rush by Blake Thompson and Steve Hutchinson. Although Hutch did not receive an assist, I do believe it was he that shot the puck on goal and Jeff then made no mistake in burying the rebound. Nice goal.
Early in the 2nd period, Brett McGuinness scored what would prove to be the winning goal. This followed some solid fore checking from Brett and his linemates Cameron, and Bell. They both earned assists on the play.
Pesendorfer stood strong the rest of the game and although outshot 42-23, victory was his...and his team mates. Well done Cyclones!!
After losing many games this year that the Cyclones could have won, this win should help the lads regain some confidence and prepare for the game on Wednesday night. Although in last place, Owen Sound outworked the Cyclones in their last match so Listowel will definately go into Owen Sound ready to play.
Molson 3 Star Selections:
1- Michael Pesendorfer
2- Brett McGuinness
3- Caleb Cameron and Jeff Bauer
Guelph Takes 6-4 Win in Listowel
Last night the fans were treated to a pretty entertaining hockey game in Listowel. The Cyclones came back from a 4-1 deficit but fell a little short as they lost 6-4 with an empty net.
I will try to fill in as our Decorated Allstar Roving Reporter is serving a self imposed 1 game suspension. We look forward to seeing Dean's always honest game summary of the game on Sunday.
The Cyclones scored the 1st goal of the game but Guelph came back with 4 straight to hold a 3 goal lead early in the 3rd period. The Cyclones did not give up and and fought hard until the final buzzer. Guelph was able to hold on for the 6-4 victory after adding an empty net goal.
Brett Catto led the charge with 2 goals and an assist. Patrick Bell scored a highlight real goal in the 1st period and Sam Patterson scored the other. Jeff Bauer had a pair of assists while Matt Halloran, Dave Dalby, Steve Hutchinson, and Caleb Cameron each had one.
Molson 3 Star Awards go to:
1st Star: Brett Catto
2nd Star: Patrick Bell
3rd Star: Sam Patterson.
Be sure to take the drive on Sunday afternoon for what should be a thriller in Elmira at 2:00.
Yes I know this was a pretty sad effort of a write up and we look forward to reading Dean's writing wizardry.

Golden Eagles Earn 5-2 Win Over Visiting Cyclones
On Saturday, October 29th / 2011 the Cyclones rolled into Brant County to square off against the 3rd place Eagles. For 58 ½ minutes of play the Cyclones matched Brantford goal for goal at 2 each. However, regulation play lasts 60 minutes and it was that other 90 seconds where the problem lay. The Cyclones defensive system completely collapsed, allowing 3 goals in a whirlwind 75 seconds; allowing the host team to build a 3-0 first period lead in rapid fire succession. The Cyclones were 2 for 5 on the PP and a near perfect 6 for 7 showing on the PK for the evening.
The Cyclones managed to get on the score board at 6:43 of the 2nd period with a solid power play effort that featured some good puck control and passing inside the zone. Captain Brett Catto snapped a pass to the blueline where Sam Patterson directed a shot towards the net; which in turn was deftly deflected by Steve Hutchison from the hash marks. Good job guys!!! This goal gave the Cyclones some life as they generated a flurry of more chances from in close for the next four or five minutes of play; but could not find the back of the net again until the 5:51mark of the 3rd period. Once again the goal was scored on the power play as Blake Thompson unleashed a drive at the net that ricocheted off the stick of Jeff Bauer and into the twine. It was another feat of Cyclonic teamwork. Once again this goal seemed to ignite the Cyclones as their renewed energy drew another power play opportunity. In that man advantage, the tide turned against the Cyclones as they were assessed a 4 minute penalty at the 8:17 mark. As a result; at 10:43 the 5th and final Eagles goal of the game was scored on the power play, and it was a sniper’s dream, making the score 5-2.
The final score of the game was indeed 5-2 but the story does not end at the 10:43 mark of the 3rd period. Rather, the story gets more interesting as the game goes on, right until the final buzzer. It is also at this point in the recollection of the story, that it becomes necessary for this reporter to drop the gloves and have a go, a literary donnybrook, a diatribe, a rant, a full on wordsmith slugfest as it were.
Among the few things in hockey that can truly get this reporter’s ink boiling are cheap shots - especially the cheap shots to the head. If you were at the game, you will understand what this is about. The remainder of the article has been removed but certainly not forgotten by those who witnessed what transpired.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Ben Nelson #1- The Wallace Township native stepped into the breach and stopped an amazing 59 of 61 shots on goal in just over 52 minutes of relief. It was a gutsy performance by the 17 year old Huron Perth Lakers “AAA” midget goalie and very worthy of 3 point honors.
2 Points: Pat Bell #20 - The Grand Valley forward stood his ground in front of the net, paid the physical price and then was tagged with all of the penalties. It all hardly seems fair to the onlookers in the crowd but Pat won’t let that get him down. He will be hard at it again for the next game.
1 Point: Matt Halloran #16- The Komoka defenceman is another tough cookie in the Cyclones line up and also battled hard until the final buzzer. Matt did get up quickly after getting unceremoniously slammed into the end boards as was described above. Hopefully there were no lingering concussion effects from that dirty hit.
Next up, the team heads back to Listowel for a Friday night tilt at 7:30 against the Guelph Hurricanes. Both teams are jockeying for 5th place, so this game should be a dandy. On Sunday, the Cyclones bus heads east on Highway 86 to tangle with the Sugar Kings in Elmira at 2:00 p.m. Another chapter in the epic drama of The Battle of Highway 86 will be written.

Cyclones Back in Win Column With 6-4 Win Over Dutchmen
On Friday, October 28th / 2011 the Cyclones jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the 3rd period and held on to defeat the Kitchener Dutchmen by a 6-4 margin. The win mercifully ends a 6 game winless run and it gives the Cyclones something to build on as they head into Brantford on Saturday night to tackle the Eagles.
The Cyclones were 2 for 5 on the PP and 8 for 10 on the PK. A defensive lapse in the last 5 minutes of the contest saw the Cyclones surrender 3 goals in a span of just over 3 minutes. In the final minute of play Jeff Bauer sealed the win with a long empty net shot from outside his own blue line. The Cyclones pumped 42 shots at the Kitchener net while the Cyclones Mike Pesendorfer was bombarded by 44 opposition shots. Once the Cyclones had established their 4 goal lead the focus shifted away from sound fundamentals as both teams engaged into a pattern of extracurricular hijinx. This resulted in various stoppages in play as penalties and infractions were doled out by the red striped officials. This modus operandi is common amongst the teams in the Midwest Division of the GOJHL, as the “game within a game” often heats up once the score becomes lopsided. Another set of lessons learned for the Red, White and Black as they progress through the regular season.
More play by play details of this game will follow later. In the meantime….
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: David Dalby #9- 3 goals on the night earned the sophomore forward top billing as he paced the scoring attack and employed his usual Cyclonic style of play for the home squad. Interim associate reporter Dylan Sayles accurately predicted the 3 goal performance, rightly pointing out early in the game that David was definitely in the groove.
2 Points: Brett Catto #17 - 2 goals on the night plus a handful of near misses outline the offensive output for the Cyclones Captain as his presence to the Cyclones lineup has been immediately felt since his return last weekend.
1 Point: Brett McGuinness - 2 assists on the night plus his typically gritty and fearless competitive style and effort earn the 20 year old forward a 3rd star selection. Brett is the Cyclones “Jack of All Trades” because he is a versatile forward who can get the job done at both ends of the ice.
Next up, the team heads south to the Gretzky Main Rink in Brantford to square off against the Eagles at 7:30 p.m. This should be another interesting test for the team as they aim for their 2nd win of the weekend.

Cycs Control Play But Lose 5-2 To Siskins
On Saturday, October 22nd / 2011 the Cyclones took another tumble as they found themselves on the short end of a 5-2 score against Waterloo at the Rec Complex. The Cyclones found themselves down 2 - 0 just past the midway through the 1st period. Just past the midway point the second period the Cyclones knotted the score at 2 apiece with 2 power play markers in less than six minutes. The Siskins reversed the growing Cyclones momentum with a goal late in the 2nd period and snuffed out any thought of a Cyclones come back by adding 2 more in the 3rd period to put the game out of reach.
The Cyclones were 2 for 7 on the PP and 3 for 3 on the PK. The story of this game was goaltending as Listowel pelted Marc Williams in the Waterloo net with 47 shots. Meanwhile, Waterloo managed to direct a miniscule 18 shots at Mike Pesendorfer, but the “Pez” was not having the best of nights as he fighting off the puck for most of the game.
For the Cyclones the final score was a cruel and unusual punishment but the squad continued to compete until the final whistle; and they kept their composure throughout the final minutes of the game when the score was out of reach. The outcome of this game is bitter pill to swallow at the moment, but it is another lesson in the learning curve for this young team. So long as the effort and the right attitude are in place then there are definitely going to be better days are ahead for the Red, White and Black.
The game marked the return of Cyclones Captain Brett Catto who has had to sit out the first 15 matches due to injury. Welcome back Brett.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Brett McGuinness #12: Brett scored on the power play to tie the game at 2 and added his usual amount of hustle and effort towards the Cyclones cause.
2 Points: Jeff Bauer #15: Jeff scored the Cyclones first goal and generated other scoring chances in the contest.
1 Point: Kyle Ellis #6: Kyle assisted on the first goal, his 3rd PP assist of the weekend.
Coming up on Friday, The Cyclones host Kitchener at b7:30, then on Saturday, the team heads south to the Gretzky Main Rink in Brantford to square off against the Eagles at 7:30 p.m.
Bleed Red, White and Black. Go Cycs Go.
Penalties Costly In 3-2 Loss to Cambridge
On Friday, October 21st / 2011 the Cyclones trial and tribulations continued as they succumbed to a 3-2 over time decision against the Winterhawks. As predicted in the pre-game Cyclones Chatter, this was a tightly played and at times a bitterly contested match. Both teams played an “in your face” style of game with an elevated level of intensity and speed. For the young Cyclones it was their best overall team effort in recent games and they got their power play clicking with 2 goals on 10 chances and generated 36 shots on goal. On the flipside, Cambridge managed 36 shots and they capitalized on 3 of their 9 power play chances including the decisive OT winner. It is worthy of mention that the first game between these two squads was a penalty filled affair and the bad tidings obviously have carried over into this match. At various times in this game the Cyclones were goaded into penalties brought on by some creative after the whistle hijinx by their opponent. Nevertheless, this young Cyclones team has to develop a thicker skin and deaf ears in order to rise above this sort of treacherous and underhanded behavior.
The Cyclones grabbed a 1-0 lead late in the 1st period when defenceman Kyle Ellis drifted at right point shot towards the goal. Tanner Simpson slapped at the rebound and then Caleb Cameron was able to establish a strong position in front of the net and squeeze the puck through from the top edge of the crease.
Both teams battled back and forth in the second period. At the midway point the game took a turn towards the rough stuff as the after the whistle scrums and the rough play increased. The most flagrant offense was a check from behind by Cambridge defender Weber that sent a high flying Jeff Bauer hard into the left wing corner boards. From the Cyclones blue line, Bauer had sped past a flat footed Weber in pursuit of the puck during a Cyclones penalty kill. Bauer caught up to the puck at the Cambridge blueline and was attempting to wheel towards the Cambridge net when Weber barreled in and sent Bauer heavily into the corner boards. How this hit was not assessed as a 5 minute major by the game officials is still a mystery. Less dangerous hits with less impact have been given a stiffer and stronger sentence.
The score stayed 1-0 in favor of the home squad until 6:35 of the 3rd period when Cambridge scored the equalizer. Prior to that goal Steve Hutchinson and Gratton traded shots as they dropped the mitts and squared off in front of the Cambridge net. In the preceding moments, Gratton had been roaring up and down the ice sending invites for a scrap and had no takers until Listowel’s #7 took him up on the offer. The Cambridge ploy worked to perfection as Hutchison was assessed an additional 2 minutes for roughing which provided Cambridge with the man advantage that they needed to tie the score at 1’s. Just 4 minutes and 8 seconds later, Caleb Cameron notched his 2nd of the match after redirecting a Kyle Ellis shot at the edge of the Cambridge crease. Jeff Bauer drew the second assist on the play. Cambridge took advantage of a late penalty call to tie the game again at 18:04.
In overtime, a very soft and cheese laden hooking call was assessed against the Cyclones; which in turn resulted in the Cambridge game winner. Sore winner of the evening awards go to Cambridge players Doherty and Mitchell for their after game verbal diarrhea; as the Cambridge players spilled onto the ice while the Cyclones started to head towards their dressing room. It was a potentially explosive scene as both benches had emptied onto the ice and emotions were still running high and tempers were short for both squads. One wonders how the game officials could have permitted that circumstance in the first place. With each team having another game to play the next night, there were no further fisticuffs or melees, as the prospects of suspension would put any would be offenders out of action until next week.
Try as they might the Cyclones cannot yet catch a break. Keep working at it men, there are better results ahead. At this time we welcome Chris Chapman to the Cyclones. Chris is a forward, he wears #14 and he hails from Stratford. Good to have you on board Chris and welcome to the team.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Sam Patterson #25: Sam bled Red, White and black all night and though he will not lead the team in scoring he will lead the team in the sweat, hustle and grit department. For those reasons Sam dons an “A” on his jersey as an Alternate Captain for the Cyclones.
2 Points: Caleb Cameron #10: Caleb scored both Cyclones goals for a total of 8 on the season. In the third period he nearly had his 3rd on a partial breakaway attempt that was foiled by the goaltender’s right toe.
1 Point: Tanner Simpson #22 - The Lucknow forward drew one assist and delivered a truck load of sand paper, grit and physical play along the boards and in front of the opposition net. Tanner is another fellow that the Cyclones look to for team leadership and he also dons an Alternate Captain’s “A” on his jersey.
Dutchmen Come Back to Win 5-4 in SO
On Tuesday, October 18th / 2011 the Cyclones descended upon Kinsmen Arena to compete against the Kitchener Dutchmen. The good news was that the Cyclones snapped out of their scoring funk, registering 4 goals on 38 shots. The bad news was that the Dutchmen scored 5 times on 29 shots, one of them being the shoot out winner. The PK was a solid 6 for 6 but the continued power play woes of the Cyclones added salt to the wound; as the Red, White and Black went 0 for 6 with the man advantage including a goose egg on a potentially pivotal power play late in the 3rd period.
Pat Bell got the scoring started for the good guys at 16:41 of the 1st period and was assisted by Blake Thompson. The Cyclones upped their lead by 2 at 6:50 of the 2nd period when Tanner Simpson set up Jeff Bauer for his team leading 8th goal of the season. The host squad cut into that lead 29 seconds later. In the 3rd period the Cyclones regained their 2 goal advantage at 2:27 when Sam Paterson and Steve Hutchison initiated a scoring sequence which saw Dylan Sayles cap the play off with a nice finish. Exactly 40 seconds later Kitchener scored again but 23 seconds after that, Pat Bell notched his second of the game with an unassisted effort. At this point the Cyclones were looking good with a 2 goal margin but as the 3rd period dragged on they ran out of gas and could not shut the host squad down. Goals at 8:30 and 11:38 drew the Dutchmen even and the rest of the 3rd period was a scoring stalemate. In the 5 minute overtime session the Cyclones dominated play with 5 shots on goal compared to 1 by the Dutchmen. In the shoot out round the Cyclones’ first two shooters were denied while the Dutchmen clinched the 2 points with goals on their 2nd and 3rd attempts. Try as they might the Cyclones cannot yet catch a break. Keep working at it men, there are better results ahead.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Pat Bell #20: The big forward from Grand Valley paced the Cyclones attack with 2 goals. More of the same will be welcomed as the Cyclones look to get back into the win column.
2Points: Jeff Bauer #15 - The Lambeth forward scored once and exhibited his usual blend of speed, science and hustle at both ends of the ice.
1 Point: Sam Paterson #25 - The London defenceman led the charge for the Cyclones rear guard while registering one assist on the Sayles goal.
Next up, the Red, White and Black head back to Memorial Arena for a Friday night tilt against a steadily improving Cambridge squad. The Winterhawks are flying a bit higher these days after having handed Elmira their 1st defeat of the season on Sunday night. On Saturday, the Cyclones venture to the Rec Complex in Waterloo to tangle with the Siskins starting at 7:30 p.m. Make the trip to both games, support the team and enjoy some exciting hockey action. It’s the Coolest Game in Town.

Hurricanes Hand Cycs 2nd Loss of Weekend
On Saturday, October 15th / 2011 the Guelph Hurricanes blanked the Cyclones by a 3-0 score, exacting a measure of revenge after the Cyclones stole one from the Hercs with a come-from-behind win last month at the Sleeman centre. The Cyclones certainly generated plenty of shots 42 in total with 21 of them coming in the opening 20 minutes. Shots against were not a serious problem as they permitted just 33 pucks to be directed at their own net and the PK unit was a perfect 5 for 5 on the night. The Achilles heel this evening was the inability to drive hard to the net on a consistent basis coupled with a continued lack of offence on the power play. Any of the handful of chances that did the Cyclones did manage to get inside the hash marks and around the blue paint were either turned aside; or the rebound or loose puck rolled past and out of harm’s way. At different segments within the match there were signs of good and sustained pressure down low but a breakthrough to the net could not be had. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes scored once at even strength in the first period and then added successive empty net goals in the 19th minute of the 3rd period to sew up the win.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Michael Pesendorfer #1 - The Novi, Michigan native made 30 saves on 31 shots and was near perfect for the night. When asked about the outcome of this game he shrugged it off saying “It Happens”.
2Points: Jeff Bauer #15 - The Lambeth forward generated scoring chances consistently throughout the game and worked hard on the penalty killing unit.
1 Point: Tanner Simpson #22 - The Lucknow forward was mucking it up in the corners and along the boards, trying to make things happen for his team at both ends of the ice.
Next up, the Red, White and Black grab their gear and travel east once more, this time to Kitchener on the 18th. It is a rare Tuesday night road game on the big sheet of ice at the Kinsmen Arena. The action starts at 7:30 p.m. The Cyclones look to break out and get things back on track in this contest.

Grey's Earn 5-3 Win Over Cyclones
Friday, October 3rd / 2008 – it was on that date that the Listowel Cyclones were last defeated by the Owen Sound Greys, by a 2-1 score in a shoot out at Memorial Arena. Fast forward to 3 years and 11 days later; and once again the Owen Sound Greys have defeated the Cyclones, this time by a 5-3 score at Memorial Arena. During the time that has elapsed in between; both teams have travelled on distinctly different and separate journeys.
For the Cyclones, relatively speaking, it has been an embarrassment of riches, having enjoyed successive winning seasons, setting team highs in 2008-2009 for the most regular season wins and for the most regular season points; and in the 2011 playoffs they came within 2 wins of a Cherrey Cup Championship trophy and a shot at the Sutherland Cup.
In a stark contrast, for the Owen Sound Greys it has been a scene of constant and almost never ending trials and tribulations. The Greys and their fans have been mercilessly tormented by: successive losing seasons (extending as far back to the 2005 - 2006 season), the constant exodus of talented players to other GOJHL teams and to other leagues, and a one season hiatus from play for the 2009 - 2010 season. (Some of our long time Cyclones fans and volunteers will recall similar dark and desperate days for the Red, White and Black not that long ago). The Greys 1 win – 12 loss record start to the 2011- 20102 season further added to the tales of woe for Owen Sound coming into Game #12 of the Cyclones regular season schedule. Give full credit to the Greys for the win tonight as they paid no attention to past history and they ignored their current struggles; putting forth a solid 60 minute effort of their own to garner their 2nd win of the season. For the Cyclones it is a biting reminder that in order to win anything in this league they must be able to put forth a full 60 minute effort of their own and be at their absolute best at all times, otherwise they can expect their opposition to capitalize in short order.
The Cyclones held the territorial advantage in the first period. In the first 20 minutes of play they outskated their opponent, outshot them 17 to 9 and outscored them by a 1-0 margin. Caleb Cameron rapped in a shot from the edge of the blue paint after taking a cross crease feed from Pat Bell, who gathered in a right wing corner pass from Jerry Ennett.
As has been the case in most Cyclones defeats this season, the skates have gone askew starting in the depths of the second 40 minutes of play, with penalty troubles and defensive zone turnovers being the common denominator in the reversal of Cyclones game by game fortunes. With 2 men in the penalty box, the Greys finally cashed in on with a power play goal at 8:40 after Cyclones net minder made the first 2 saves but could not stop a 3rd shot. The Cyclones dodged another penalty and came close to a shorthanded go ahead goal but Jeff Bauer’s breakaway drive was denied by Greys goaltender Torrenueva. Bauer redeemed himself at 18:00 when he roared in on a breakaway rush and beat Torrenueva with a quick and low short side shot. Pat Bell grabbed a loose puck in his own zone, moved the puck up ice to Dylan Sayles along the left wing boards, who then snapped a letter perfect tape to tape pass from well inside his own blue line, through the open seams and onto Bauer’s stick on the other side of centre ice. This would be the high point of the Cyclones game for in the 3rd period the Greys would take over.
In the 3rd period the Greys continued to skate hard, fore check, apply some body checking; creating defensive zone turnovers and winning loose puck battles. The flood gates opened at 6:12 with 3 Greys even strength goals inside a span of almost 7 minutes. This was the turning point of the match as the Cyclones did little to match or exceed their competitors’ efforts and determination. Sensing that the Cyclones were not pushing back, the Greys kept coming harder, gaining strength and confidence with every shift as the 3rd period progressed. A late goal in the 19th minute by the Greys racked the score up to a 5-2 count. The Cyclones countered with a power play goal by Caleb Cameron at 19:02 assisted by Jeff Bauer; but the damage was already done. The Cyclones could ill afford to give up the 2 points but the Owen Sound Greys played like a hungry and a more desperate hockey team that was starving for a win – and indeed they were.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Michael Pesendorfer #1 - The Novi, Michigan native made 36 saves on 41 shots and kept this game from becoming a double digit scoring explosion; making some tough saves from inside the hash marks including a stop of a point blank shot from 10 feet away.
2 Points: Jeff Bauer #15 - The Lambeth forward scored 1G and 1A and was one of the few bright spots for the Cyclones in this contest. More of the same effort will be needed for the next game against Guelph.
1 Point: Caleb Cameron #10 - The sophomore forward from sunny Sundridge scored 2 goals to pace the scoring attack and worked diligently on the penalty kill for the Red, White and Black.
Next up, the Red, White and Black then grab their gear and trek east to Guelph on the 15th for a 7:30 tilt against the Hurricanes at the Sleeman Centre. This is a very important game for the Cyclones as they look to get themselves back into the win column against a team that trail them in the standings thus far as the ¼ point of the season approaches.

St. Thomas Edge Cyclones 4-2 at Showcase Tourney
On Saturday, October 8th / 2011, the Cyclones ventured to St. Catherines to play their 1st interlocking game of the season as part of the 2011 GOJHL Showcase. The Cyclones took on a solid St. Thomas Stars team and after a close and hard fought game the Stars defeated the Cyclones by a 4 -2 count, sealing the win with a last second empty net goal to foil a comeback attempt by the hard charging Cyclones. Aside from a minor rumble that broke out late in the 2nd period, both teams played a clean and fast moving game, limiting each other to a handful of prime scoring opportunities.
The Cyclones took an early minor penalty in the game but misfortune quickly changed to opportunity. On the penalty kill, Caleb Cameron sent Pat Bell loose up the right wing side as the Grand Valley forward roared around the flat footed defender, cut in all alone on net and slid the puck in for an early 1-0 lead. Both teams continued to battle in close quarters for the remainder of the period until the 18:30 mark, when the Stars penetrated the Cyclones defensive shield and tied the score at 1-1.
In the second period the Stars scored their only PP goal in 5 tries at 10:14, knocking in a rebound off of the rush. The second period featured a tilt of fisticuffs as pat Bell squared off with Chris Maton as they could not agree on whether or not The Pez should run for Prez in the 2012 election. Meanwhile, back to the action and no further scoring took place in the second period as the shots on goal and the scoring chances were kept to such a bare minimum that Mother Hubbard’s empty cupboard would look bountiful. The Cyclones seemed to lose a step in their speed and in their drive to the net as the period progressed but two late chances by Dylan Sayles and by Alex Kuntz almost salvaged the Cyclones second period.
In the third the Cyclones David Dalby scored on a rebound after Jarrett Kup set up Jeff Bauer’s initial shot, thus tying things up at 2 apiece at the 4:48 mark. This bit of momentum did not last for long as the Stars regained their lead at 6:03 after Michael Pesendorfer made multiple saves before the loose puck was jammed in. The Cyclones continued to hunt for an equalizer and had a 6 on 4 PP in the late stages of the 3rd when the Stars were tagged with a hooking call at 17:10. Try as they might the Cyclones could not draw even, surrendering the empty net goal with 1 second left to play in the game. Shots on goal favored the Stars by a slim 35 – 33 count, as the Stars were 1/5 on the PP and 5 for 5 on the PK.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Sam Patterson #25 - The London blueliner continues to grind away at the opposition forwards as they attempt to invade the Cyclones zone. On the offensive side of the puck, Sammy plays his part to generate some scoring chances and uses his size and experience to keep the opposition honest.
2 Points: Michael Pesendorfer #1 - The Novi, Michigan native was steady once again in his 2nd start in less than 24 hours. After leaving the game late in the 2nd period after having been shaken up in a collision with a St Thomas player, Mike showed his mettle and competitive spirit as he returned to the nets to play the entire 3rd period.
1 Point: Jarrett Kup: #8 - The rookie blueliner from Rosseau earned 1 assist and played a steady game at both ends of the ice against a fast moving and hard charging set of opposing forwards.
Play resumes Friday, October 14th as the Cyclones host Owen Sound at 7:30 p.m. at the friendly confines of Memorial Arena. The Red, White and Black then grab their gear and trek east to Guelph on the 15th for a 7:30 tilt against the Hurricanes at the Sleeman Centre. These are two very important games for the Cyclones as they look to get themselves back into the win column against 2 teams that trail them in the standings thus far as the ¼ point of the season approaches.

Cyclones Win 5-2 Over Visiting Siskins
On Friday, October 7th / 2011, the Cyclones continued their winning ways over the Waterloo Siskins with a 5 – 2 victory on Memorial Arena ice. The win was their second is as many games against the gold and black which saw the final outcome decided within the last 3 minutes of play in the contest. The Cyclones outshot their visitors by a 42 – 33 margin, had an 0 for 5 night on the power play, and a 5 for 7 effort on the PK. The Cyclones ground out the win using a full bench and a sustained effort for all 3 periods of play. Michael Pesendorfer was in the blue paint for the Cyclones and “in the zone” making several good saves for the home side at key junctures in the hockey game.
The first period featured a brisk end to end pace as both teams skated hard and penalty free, save 1 minor for each team. The Cyclones seemed to gain the upper hand in winning one on one battles for loose pucks, and as a result they held a 14 – 9 shots on goal advantage and a 1-0 lead after the first 20 minutes. Brett Mc Guinness scored an unassisted goal at 13:22 after intercepting a turnover inside the Waterloo blueline and driving hard to the net. Dylan Sayles set the screen in front as Mc Guinness slid the puck over the goal line from the left wing hash mark area.
In the second period waterloo had a slight 15 to 13 shots on goal edge but both teams traded goals, leaving the Red, White and Black ahead by 1 after 40 minutes of play. Both teams turned to a “grind it out along the boards” style of play which yielded power play chances for both squads. The first of 2 Waterloo power play goals found its way across the red line at 15:45. This was countered by Brett Mc Guinness’ second unassisted goal of the night at 19:24. A shot on goal was knocked away by Waterloo but #12 was there to grab the loose puck and jam it in from close range.
Play turned chippy in the 3rd period as Waterloo took a 5 minute major penalty for a check to the head. David Dalby was the Cyclones player on the receiving end and left the ice with a bloodied nose and blood spattered uniform. A Waterloo minor penalty created a short lived 5 on 3 PP advantage for the Cyclones until they took an unnecessary penalty of their own to even things up. This was countered by a bonehead move by Waterloo to run the Listowel goalie which drew the ire of the Cyclones players who then proceeded to finger the culprit responsible and mete out some retaliatory justice. When all was said and done, none of the penalties resulted in goals and both teams resumed to hockey rather than the chippy play.
The Cyclones generated some good chances off of the fore check and were rewarded for their efforts at 10:51. Sporting a fresh number 14 in place of his now bloodied number 9, David Dalby circled out from behind the net towards the right wing side, squared up to the creased and unleashed a high and hard bullet shot from the left face - off circle….roof daddy it’s in the net and sends the water bottle flying onto the ice. Jeff Bauer and Dylan Sayles registered assists on the scoring play. The Cyclones had 2 choice break away chances after that but both were denied. Waterloo scratched their way to within 1 with their 2nd power play goal at 17:24, much to the delight of their fans. That glimmer of hope was quickly extinguished with the Waterloo defensive faux pas of the night at 18:15. As he was being harassed by the pesky fore checking of Alex Kuntz, from the left wing side of the net a Waterloo defender flipped the puck at the feet of his own goaltender. From there the puck bounced crazily off the pads and the skates of the surprised net minder before squirting through the legs and over the goal line. An own goal to which Kuntz was given credit on the score sheet and rightly so as his persistent fore checking created the turn over and yielded a badly needed goal for the home side. Waterloo continued to attempt with their come back, pulling the goaltender twice in the final 2 minutes of play but Jarret Kup and Tanner Simpson sprung David Dalby loose as he roared up ice and slammed home his 2nd goal of the game into the yawning cage. Signed, Sealed & Delivered !!!
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Brett Mc Guinness #12 - The Stratford native bagged his first 2 goals of the season and were just what the doctor ordered to balance out the team scoring and to help propel the Cyclones to victory. There are no short cuts in Brett’s approach to his game as he always gives an honest and hardworking effort on every shift of every match.
2 Points: David Dalby #14 - The Stratford native was forced to change uniforms late in the game but that did not hurt his play on the ice as he scored both the game winning and game clinching goals in the 3rd period. David is another member of this Cyclones team who leaves it all on the ice and bleeds Red as well as White and Black for every shift.
1 Point: Michael Pesendorfer #1 – The Novi, Michigan native was steady once again inside the blue paint for the Cyclones. Turning aside 31 of 33 shots “The Pez” looked cool under fire as Waterloo buzzed his crease, making some nifty saves to keep the other team at bay until his teammates secured the win in the final minutes of the match.
On Saturday, the Cyclones participate in the GOJHL Showcase Weekend held at St. Catherines. The game will be at 2:00 p.m. in the Seymour Hannah Sports and Entertainment Centre located in St. Catherines. The defending 2011 Western Conference Champions St. Thomas Stars will be the opposing team and this game will be a good test for the young Cyclones squad.

Cyclones Win 4-1 Over Siskins in Waterloo
On Sunday, October 2nd / 2011, the Cyclones finished a 3 game weekend with a 4 – 1 win over the Waterloo Siskins, and in the process they captured 4 out of a possible 6 points. After 9 games the team has a 0.500 record of 4 wins, 4 losses and 1 OT loss. The win in Waterloo was important for the Men in Black as it solidifies their grasp on 4th place for the time being, pending the outcome of games in hand for both Kitchener and Cambridge. After a hard fought win less than 24 hours earlier against the Cambridge Winterhawks, the Cyclones showed no signs of fatigue whatsoever as Dave Williams and the coaching staff had the team focused and ready to play a full 60 minutes of hockey. The hometown Siskins did their best to chop their way to victory but the Cyclones could not be bushed by their opposition on this day.
The Cyclones scored the all important 1st goal of the game at 8:55 using their power play. Alex Kuntz bagged his first goal in a Cyclones uniform, lifting a pass from the right wing side of the crease high into the top corner. Blake Thompson and Jordan Skerret drew assists from the blueline on the play. Waterloo knotted things at 1 with an even strength shot from the right wing faceoff circle at 12:29 – a play that is somewhat reminiscent of an ex-NHL guy by the name of Messier. Interesting. Both teams battled to and from for the remainder of the opening period with the Cyclones holding a 15 – 9 shots on goal advantage.
In the second period the Cyclones played a patient game of fore checking and zone coverage which paid dividends in the form of 2 even strength tallies. At 3:44Caleb Cameron shadowed a Waterloo defender and forced a turnover at the door step of the Waterloo crease. The giveaway was quickly deposited into the mesh by #10 for his 4th of the campaign. Less than 2 minutes later the Cyclones upped their lead to 3 – 1 at 5:04 using a total team effort of solid goaltending, good defensive zone coverage, a quick transition and a goal scorer’s patience and precision. Waterloo was pressing for a tying goal and attacked the net with all three forwards caught deep in the offensive zone. The initial shot on the Waterloo rush was stopped by Cyclones goalie Michael Pesendorfer who was out to challenge the shooter and cut down the angles. The rebound was scooped up quickly by Brett Mc Guinness who swiftly moved the puck up and over to a wide open Pat Bell. From his just above own hash marks the big forward sped up the left wing to lead a 2 on 1 rush, trapping one defender in his wake. #20 crossed into Waterloo territory, looked off to his wing man just enough to force the Waterloo net minder to over commit, opening up just enough room for the puck to slide through cleanly. B - E - A - U - T - Y. Following that goal, the Cyclones had a pair of power play chances but could not cash in before Waterloo had 3 chances in a row, all of which were repelled by the Cyclones PK, led by “The Pez” in the Cyclones blue paint. Once again the Cyclones held a shots on goal advantage, this time it was 13 to 8 in the second period.
In the third period the Cyclones continued applying pressure inside the Waterloo zone which kept the Siskins scoring chances to a minimum and in the blue paint Michael Pesendorfer steered aside 11 shots over the final 20 minutes of play. The Cyclones defenders were diligent in clearing any rebounds and loose pucks that may have happened to land in harm’s way and generally swept aside any threatening activity put forth by the Siskins. Dylan Sayles capped off the Cyclones scoring at 15:51 with a power play goal. Number 11 threaded the needle through a maze of players after grabbing a rebound off the end dasher boards that was created by the point shot of Jordan Skerrett. Slammin’ Sam Paterson drew the 2nd assist on the play. Overall the Cyclones outshot their opponents by a 35 – 28 count and went 2 for 11 on the PP and a spotless 6 for 6 on the PK.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Mike Pesendorfer #1 - The Novi, Michigan native stepped up his game with another rock steady performance as he turned away 27 of 28 to backstop his team to victory. “Vote Pez for Prez” in 2012 !!!
2 Points: Jordan Skerrett #3 - The 17 year old from Toronto notched 2A (his first points as a Cyclone) and played a well rounded game at both ends of the ice including some good work on the PP. Nice job Jordan.
1 Point: Alex Kuntz #27 - Shades of another Cyclones forward wearing #27 (and coincidentally also by the first name of Alex) were apparent in this game. Alex Kuntz’s first goal Junior B goal was coupled with a steady fore checking effort inside the Waterloo zone. Good job Alex.
The Cyclones must now get ready for next weekend as they face a 7:30 p.m. return visit from the Siskins on Friday night at Memorial Arena.

Cyclonic Comeback With 4-3 Win Over WinterHawks
On Saturday, October 1st at the Shade Street Arena in Cambridge, the Cyclones pulled out an important and gutsy come from behind road win as they defeated the Winterhawks by a 4-3 margin. The start of the game was far from an orchestral masterpiece for the Cyclones but by the sound of the final whistle the Men in Black were singing a sweet victory tune; as they managed to fend off a late charge from their foe and emerge with a “W” and a vital 2 points for the GOJHL Midwest Division standings. In recent years, previous encounters between these two teams at this storied building have always been entertaining and at times gut wrenching; and this match fit the mold to a tee.
This being the first meeting of the season between the Hawks and the Cycs; both teams spent the first 10 minutes of the game testing each other’s defenses - skating swiftly and putting up a brisk fore check. The Hawks gained the upper hand with a power play marker at 10:34. Pat Bell’s breakaway attempt was stopped by the mitt of Michalski, thus denying a quick equalizer. Shortly thereafter, the Hawks capitalized on some all around weak defensive coverage by the Cyclones to up their lead to a 2-0 count at 11:28. At this point Derick Mitchell was lifted from the Cyclones net in favor of Michael Pesendorfer who was quickly pressed into action as the Cyclones were cited for at their 3rd straight penalty of the period at the 13:19 mark. Some strong work on the PK allowed the Cyclones to emerge unscathed. In an ensuing Cyclones power play Jeff Bauer’s solo dash was turned aside by the Hawks ‘tender Michalski. Late in the 1st period, a rumble erupted after Matt Halloran was rammed into the boards before the offending Hawks player tangled with Tanner Simpson in some close hand to hand (fist to fist) combat. Both teams registered 12 shots on goal in the first stanza.
The Cyclones started the second stanza with 1:31 of PK before they could start to think about doing anything in the offensive zone. Matt Halloran made a solid defensive sweep check on an attacking forward, then jumped to his feet to clear the puck up ice to a waiting teammate and for good measure he just failed to convert a centering pass after jumping in the rush to create a 2 on 1 dash to the net. The Cyclones would get their chance to score on the power play at 7:49 when Kyle Ellis broke free to redirect a pass from outside the perimeter, capping off some crisp passing and puck movement by the Cyclones. The penalty parade that started in the opening 20 minutes continued during the remaining duration of the second period and into the third period; as both teams were found guilty of various and numerous transgressions in the eyes of the men bearing the red stripes. The flow of the game became very choppy and scrambled which was of benefit to the Cyclones as they managed to gain offensive strength and momentum as the game wore on. Jeff Bauer had the puck hop over his stick while trying to knock in a wide open shot, while Caleb Cameron had 3 chances denied – the first off of the post, the second betrayed by a broken stick and the third a penalty shot right toe save by Michalski in the Hawks blue paint. In the 2nd stanza the Cyclones held a 16 – 12 shots on goal advantage.
As they did to start the second period the Cyclones started the third period shorthanded, followed by another penalty at 1:30. The 5 on 3 PK was successfully defended but the Cyclones were burned on the 5 on 4 at 2:19. Staring a 2 goal deficit with just under 18 minutes left to play, the Cyclones saved their best for last as they tied the game with two even strength goals – the first by David Dalby at 7:41 and the second by Jeff Bauer at 10:32. On the Dalby goal, rookie blueliner Jarrett Kup sprang the puck loose into neutral ice towards the Cambridge net. Both of the Hawks defenders and their goaltender all stood motionless, anticipating either an offside or an icing call as Dalby drove through the middle, breezed across the blue line, dove forwards and swept the puck through the legs of a stunned and flat footed Michalski who had barely started to move beyond the blue paint to challenge the shot. On the Bauer goal, Jeff’s shot from the weak side slot area was the culmination of some hard work and sustained pressure deep inside the offensive zone. The reporter’s score sheet suggests that the assist were drawn by Cameron and Mc Guinness however, the officials seemed to believe that both Jarret Kup and Kyle Ellis had abandoned their blue line spots to play forward and draw the assists. Thank goodness for the black road jerseys as the cyclones were credited with the goal and the game was knotted at 3’s with less than 10 minutes to play. At 16:47, the Cyclones grabbed their one and only lead of the hockey game as Pat Bell slammed in a rebound after Kup made a crisp cross ice pass inside the blue line to Ellis, who then teed up a simple right point shot that hit the goaltender’s pads and landed in Bell’s wheel house. For the Grand Valley native it was sweet redemption after being tagged with an iffy and sketchy penalty call less than 2 ½ minutes previous. The stage was set for a wild and hairy finish as Cyclones net minder Pesendorfer was tagged with a delay of game infraction at 17:07, followed by a 6 on 4 power play with the Cambridge net empty, followed by Jeff Bauer’s empty net shot that just hooked wide when a Cambridge defender caused just enough trouble and distraction to help send the shot amiss. Mercifully the game clock wound down to zero and the Cyclones had secured their 3rd win of this young season.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards are as follows:
3 Points: Mike Pesendorfer #1 - The Novi, Michigan native stepped in with a rock steady off the bench performance turning aside 26 of 27 shots in just over 48 minutes of work.
2 Points: Pat Bell #20 - The Grand Valley native got his game on with 1G and 1A and some grit and intensity. The goal could not have come at a better time for the 3rd year Cyclones forward and his team.
1 Point Each: Jarret Kup #8 and Kyle Ellis #6 - Similar to another Cyclones blueline tandem of #8 and #6 from last season, Jarret and Kyle each had a stellar game for their club. Jarret is credited with 3 assists, while Kyle registered 1G and 2 assists in the game. Both players provided their team with some timely scoring from the blueline as well as some good work defensively.
The Cyclones must now get ready for a quick turnaround as they face a 1:30 afternoon contest at the Rec Complex in Waterloo against the Siskins. The Cyclones will need all of their hockey smarts and will need all of their hands on deck for this final match up f the weekend.

Cyclones Play Solid Game but Lose 3-2 to SugarKings
On Friday, September 30th at Memorial Arena, the Cyclones and Elmira Sugar Kings locked horns in a defensive battle wherein the Cyclones made a late charge in the 3rd period but fell a goal short in a 3-2 decision for the visiting squad. Once again untimely penalties and an inability to generate a sustained scoring attack would be the Cyclones nemesis coupled with periodic struggles to break the cycle of opposition fore checking. Once again the Cyclones put their best skate forward and battled hard until the final buzzer but clearly their best efforts could not produce any points in this contest. The Cyclones were 1 for 7 on the PP and added a shorthanded goal while allowing 1 PP goal on 9 opposition opportunities. The visitors directed 26 shots on goal at Michael Pesendorfer while the Cyclones aimed 37 shots at Nick Horrigan.
The Cyclones were up by a 1-0 count at the 5:05 mark with a power play goal from Caleb Cameron. A left wing point shot from Sam Paterson hit Jeff Bauer in the slot and the puck was redirected to the weak side where Cameron quickly slipped the disc into the yawning cage. The Cyclones continued to play well to start the first stanza but a collection of 5 consecutive infractions stalled that momentum and produced the visitors’ first and only power play goal at 15:51.
Early in the second period a pair of miscues by the Cyclones resulted in two opposition goals in a span of just under 2 minutes. A mix up at the Elmira blue line resulted in a 3-1 where the puck carrier looked off and sapped a shot into the mesh at 3:15. This was followed by a strong fore check as the home side could not find an quick outlet pass and move up ice. Instead the puck stayed inside the Cyclones zone and soon found itself in their net at 4:58. Four consecutive opposition infractions were called but the Cyclones power play stayed on the perimeter and did not do enough to penetrate the defensive box and get into the dirty areas in front of the net. As a result, no effective scoring chances were produced, making for a number of easy saves on relatively harmless shots from long range.
In the 3rd stanza the Cyclones emerged with more offensive focus and started driving the net more consistently and with improved vigor. With the help of the cross bar on a Sam Paterson screen shot, Nick Horrigan was equal to the task on all shots - except for Jeff Bauer’s inspiring solo rush on the penalty kill. Number 15 intercepted a weak cross ice pass, and from his own blue line he stormed in with two defenders hacking and whacking him, sweeping the puck through Horrigan’s legs while being tripped. B-E-A-U-T-Y. The goal came at 7:15 and it gave the Red, White and Black a much needed shot in the arm and put them back into contention. Then at 9:02 the visitors were tagged with a major checking from behind penalty as Clayton Greer (one of their usual suspects) slammed Caleb Cameron head first into the boards. Cameron and Greer then jousted as they exchanged parting shots with each other before both were escorted off of the ice. During the 5 minute power play David Dalby drew a 2 minute holding penalty which also drew cat calls and howls of disbelief from the visiting fans stationed in the east end of the arena. The Cyclones continued to press on the power play but to no avail. With Cass Frey in the sin bin (another of the usual suspects) and with the goal tender out with 64 seconds remaining, the Cyclones made one more attempt to tie the score but were turned aside by Horrigan and his PK patrol men.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards shape up like this:
3 Points: Jeff Bauer #15 - Jeff provided the bulk of the offense for the Cyclones registering 1 G and 1A.
2 Points: Sam Paterson #25- Sam played with energy, grit and determination for another full 60 minutes, leading his mates by example.
1 Point: David Dalby #9 – David was a “Tazmanian Devil” on the PK and played with his usual repertoire of energy, enthusiasm and effort.
A special mention to former Cyclone and now Guelph Storm forward Ryan Horvat. On Friday night the Simcoe native scored his first 2 OHL goals and added 1 assist in a 10-2 demolition of the Erie Otters in front of a home town crowd at the Sleeman centre. Great Job Ryan and keep up the good work!!!!!
The Cyclones must now get ready for a 7:30 Saturday tilt against Cambridge at the Shade Street Arena; followed in quick succession by a 1:30 afternoon contest at the Rec Complex in Waterloo against the Siskins. The Cyclones will need all of their hockey smarts and will need all of their hands on deck for these forthcoming match ups.

Penalty Trouble Costly In 5-2 Loss
On Friday, September 23rd at Memorial Arena, the Cyclones ran out of gas, ran out of miracles and ran out of luck as a short staffed Red, White and Black squad lost 5 -2 to Brantford. With 5 regulars out of the lineup due to either suspension or injury; the Cyclones lost another player early in the 1st period with a checking from behind penalty, making an already short bench that much shorter. Compounding the issue were the 45 minutes in penalties and the after effects of the shoot out win the night before. Nonetheless, the Cyclones put their best skate forward and battled hard until the final buzzer but clearly their best efforts could not produce any points in this contest.
The Cyclones were 1 for 5 on the PP and allowed 3 PP goals on 16 Brantford opportunities. The Eagles snapped 46 shots on goal at the tandem of Derick Mitchell and Ben Nelson, while the Cyclones mustered 33pucks at Bryce O’Hagan in the Eagles net.
The Cyclones trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes and in the 2nd period were poised to make some noise in the 2nd period but fell behind 2-0 at the 11:45 mark. The home side got themselves back into the game with an unassisted effort by Ben Shelley at 11:52. Revived by the quick goal, the Cyclones were buzzing the Brantford zone in search of another to tie the game. The Cyclones rally was short circuited by 2 Brantford power play goals – the first a 5 on 3 goal at 14:49, and the second a 5 on 4 marker at 15:23; both of which chased Derick Mitchell from the blue paint and deflated the home side.
In the third period both teams continued to battle to and fro at both ends of the rink as they traded power play goals late in the period. Brantford notched theirs at 16:51 while the Cyclones Ben Shelley jammed in his second of the match at 19:55 with assists from David Dalby and Pat Bell.
The Cyclones look forward to getting some players back into their line up as they prepare for a 3 game set next weekend - Friday night home stand against Elmira, followed by a 7:30 Saturday tilt against Cambridge at the Shade Street Arena; followed in quick succession by a 1:30 afternoon contest at the Rec Complex in Waterloo against the Siskins. The Cyclones will need all of their hockey smarts and will need all of their hands on deck for these forthcoming match ups.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards shape up like this:
3 Points: Ben Shelley #28 - The 16 year old rookie from Guelph scored his first 2 Junior B goals and was one of the offensive bright lights in the game for the Red, White and Black in this match.
2 Points: Jerry Ennett #26 - The 17 year old from Stratford played an up tempo game and had a couple of good scoring chances including a point blank shot from a 2 on 1 rush with Jarret Kup that was kicked out by the left toe of the Brantford goaltender.
1 Point: David Dalby #9 - The second year forward had another energetic outing and was kept busy all night long on the penalty kill.

Cycs Come Back from 3-1 Deficit to Win 4-3 in S.O.
On Thursday, September 22nd at the Sleeman Centre, the Guelph Hurricanes grabbed a 3-1 lead with 10 minutes to play in the 3rd period, but after all was said and done it was the Cyclones who emerged with a heroic 4-3 shoot out victory. For the Cyclones and their fans, it was a sense of déjà vu all over again; as the Cyclones were outshooting their opponents by a 2-1 margin but were trailing on the score sheet by 2 goals – a carbon copy of the 4-2 Hurricanes win last Friday at Memorial Arena. As was the case last Friday, the Cyclones did not quit and they refused to cave in. This time around, the Cyclones were rewarded for their persistent efforts – heading home with 2 important road points and a measure of satisfaction with buoyed confidence to boot.
The first period of play favored the Cyclones as they held a 16 – 9 shots on goal advantage but trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes. Ben Shelley and Slammin’ Sammy Patterson teamed up to get the puck to Dylan Sales who slipped a shot into the mesh from the left wing circle at 4:12 of the second period to get the Cyclones in gear. The Hurricanes regained their lead at 7:36 with their only power play goal of the game on a shot from the high slot that seemed to elude the Cyclones defenders and goal keeper Derrick Mitchell. The second period of play was controlled by Guelph as they used 4 power play advantages to generate 12 shots on goal which kept the Cyclones off balance as they managed only 8 in the middle stanza.
The turning points of the game took place in the third period starting after Guelph upped their lead to 3-1 with 10 minutes to play in the 3rd period. The Cyclones did not quit and continued to fight for every square inch of ice. Their gutsy effort and inspired play was rewarded with a goal in the 18th minute by Steve Hutchison to draw within one, assisted by Aaron Armstrong (nifty drop pass) and Dylan Sayles. Then immediately after, a scrap broke out as Slammin’ Sammy Patterson squared off against an unhappy Guelph player. The Hurricanes forward quickly realized that he had bitten off more than he could chew, as #25 overwhelmed him with a flurry of chin music.
This donnybrook changed the complexion of the game immediately. A scant 25 seconds later, thanks to some feisty corner work in the by Jerry Ennett, Guelph took another undisciplined penalty - jealous of the fact that our #26 has an “Army”. The stage was set for a Cyclones power play goal at 19:24 by Jeff Bauer with Derrick Mitchell on the bench in favour of a 6th attacker. Pat Bell and Blake Thompson assisted on the equalizer. Overtime solved nothing despite the Cyclones 4 shots versus 1 from Guelph. In the shoot out, Derrick Mitchell slammed the door shut on all 3 Guelph attempts while Jeff Bauer’s short side shot was the game winner. Boo-yah !!!!!
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards shape up like this:
3 Points: Dylan Sayles #11 - The 17 year old rookie from Kincardine scored the Cyclones 1st goal and assisted on the second goal, plus played an inspired physical game, hitting opposition jerseys here and there and everywhere. The Cyclones forward is starting to put some bite into his game.
2 Points: Jeff Bauer #15- The 2nd year forward from Lambeth scored 2 more big goals to help his team garner the come from behind win – first with the dramatic equalizer in the final minute of the 3rd and then a coolly placed shoot out shot to put the Cyclones ahead for good.
1 Points: Derrick Mitchell #31- The 20 year old from Goderich turned away 24 of 27 shots plus made 2 big saves in the shoot out against Guelph’s top two snipers; shutting down the Hurricanes and in so doing securing his first victory in a Cyclones uniform. Since their inception in the 2008-2009 season, shoot outs have been unkind to the Cyclones but such was not the case on this night.
Honorable Mention: The Rest of the Cyclones Game Roster – Give full credit to the rest of the team for keeping up the fight until the final whistle with some gutsy and determined efforts over the 65 plus minutes of play. In this game perhaps the guys were trying to do too much individually at times, but overall their team effort is starting to take shape. Over the course of the season the squad will improve their play as a team and tonight’s win was a big step towards achieving that end result. Good work men.
Next Up – Brantford Golden Eagles arrive on Friday, September 23rd at Memorial Arena for a 7:30 start. This will be another test for the young Cyclones squad. Bleed Red, White & Black !!! Go Cyclones Go!!!
Cullitons Win Nailbiter With 3-2 OT Win
On Sunday, September 18th the Cyclones and their arch rivals from Perth County dueled it out on the ice for 64 minutes and 19 seconds of play before the host team won it on a bullet wrist shot in the Overtime frame.
The Cyclones caught a highly hyped host team flat footed and off guard. As a result, the Cyclones were able to deftly stake themselves to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. The host squad clawed their way back into the match and knotted the affair at deuces after 40 minutes. Nothing was decided in the 3rd 20 minute session and the game was decided in overtime – a scant 51 seconds before the final buzzer and the start of the shoot out round.
at Bell got the goal scoring started with his 2nd of the year from Jeff Bauer at 48 seconds of the 1st period. A turn over in the Listowel zone was quickly sent up ice by Bauer from the corner to the Cyclones blue line. Bell gathered in the pass and started to blaze a trail up the middle of the ice, turning n the afterburners to beat the defender 1 on 1 before setting himself up for a sick wrist shot that beat the goaltender on the blocker side. The Cyclones were 1 for 5 on the PP and cashed their only marker in at 11:37 of the 1ST period. Kyle Ellis launched a shot through traffic from the right point that hit the goaltender and dropped to the right edge of the blue paint. The rebound was rapped in immediately – Brett Mc Guinness #12 was credited with the goal and Tanner Simpson with the 2nd assist.
In the second period, the host team battled back with their only power play goal at 2:58, a 2 foot gimmee shot from the weak side that Derek Mitchell had no chance on, followed by an even strength goal – a rebound at the edge of the blue paint at 8:05. Play began to get increasingly chippy from that point on as the host team started to take some liberties with their guests; all of which boiled over at 17:21 with 2 scraps on the same stoppage. The 1st bout featured Brett Mc Guinness and Ryan Watson in the junior welterweight division, while the 2nd bout featured Tanner Simpson and Shayne Rhyno in the heavyweight division. Both scraps involved some intense blows to the noggin but all combatants skated away unfazed by the consecutive knocks to the cranium. Suspensions to the heavy weight combatants are in their immediate future; as is a rush to the rule books to see what the new definition of icing is for the 2011-2012 season.
In the third period 2 minor penalties in the 7th minute (one for each squad) were called; and except for another host penalty at 13:02, the game officials put away their whistles and let the action unfold in what evolved to become an on ice jungle like atmosphere.
In the overtime the host team grabbed control of the puck inside the Cyclones zone and snapped a sizzling wrist shot to secure the win. Credit the Cyclones for a gutsy and inspired performance against a highly touted team of veterans who up until now had averaged 7 goals per home game in this the early throes of the 2011 – 20102 regular season campaign.
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards shape up like this:
3 Points: Derick Mitchell #31 - The Goderich native stood tall in the Cyclones blue paint against his former club, stopping 40 of 43 shots, and was razor sharp from the very start of the games. A better fate was deserved but nonetheless full marks are given for the outstanding effort. Excellent game Derick.
2 points: Sam Patterson #25 - Tough and dependable defencemen come from London and Sam certainly fits the bill to a tee. With the early departure of Blake Thompson in the opening minute of the 2nd period, Sam stepped in and played a ton of minutes in all situations, especially so in the latter stages with the outcome of the game on the line. Keep up the good work Sam.
1 point each: Brett Mc Guinness #12 & Tanner Simpson #22 - Brett and Tanner were involved in the 2nd Cyclones goal of the night and in the 2 scraps of the night. Tanner will probably have to sit out the next game or two for his trouble while Brett is not likely to have to miss any games. Nevertheless, the point here is that although fighting is frowned upon by some people in some hockey circles; these two Cyclones were not about to be intimidated by the juvenile antics of the home squad and in so doing they proceeded to defend the crest and at the same time put the other team to the test. Good job Men.
Honorable mention for best off ice performance of the night goes to the Storm Troopers who comprise “Ennett’s Army”. Decked out in their home made Cyclones regalia, this squad of enthusiastic youths were on hand to root for #26 and cheer on the Cyclones. Nicely Done. Every team needs an Army of supporters and this group will do the Cyclones just fine.On Thursday, September 22nd the Cyclones make their first trip to the Sleeman Centre in Guelph for a 7:30p.m. tilt against the Hurricanes, followed the next night by a 7:30 p.m. contest at Listowel Memorial Arena with the Brantford Golden Eagles. The Cyclones mettle will be put to the test early this season with back to back games on consecutive nights. Grab your coat and make the trip…see you there.
Bleed Red, White and Black!!! Let’s Go Cyclones!!!!
Guelph Beat Cyclones 4-2 In Listowel
On Friday, September 16th the Cyclones and Guelph Hurricanes did battle at memorial Arena and after 60 minutes the Hurricanes emerged with a 4 – 2 victory.
Prior to the start of the game, a brief center ice ceremony was held wherein the Listowel Kinsmen presented a shiny new Olympia to Steve Hardie, Director of parks & Recreation for the Town of North Perth. The cost of the new machine was fully funded by the industrious and generous efforts of the Listowel Kinsmen and Listowel Kinette Clubs. It is also worthy of mention that the Listowel Clubs were named the winners of the Bill Skelly Award for District 1, for their hard work in raising funds to fight Cystic Fibrosis. Chris Kurz is front and centre in that effort having run in two fundraising & awareness runs. The first run was from Kincardine to Listowel (in the pouring rain) and the most recent in a run this past winter from Listowel to Stratford and back to Listowel. Thank you to the Kinsmen and Kinettes for their tireless and unwavering volunteer work and contribution to the betterment of our community.
In the hockey game the Cyclones outshot their opponents by a massive 53 – 32 shots on goal margin but could not bury their chances, especially in the power play which short circuited, posting a 1 for 9 result.
Colin Furlong was huge in net for the Hurricanes as he out dulled the Cyclones tandem of Michael Pesendorfer and Derrick Mitchell who turned back 28 of 32 shots. The Guelph power play took advantage of their chances, scoring twice in four tries.
The first period of play was brisk and fast moving as both teams exhibited speed and quick transitional play. Guelph opened the scoring at 15:32 of the 1st period with their first PP goal – Kinsella banged in a rebound after Wood and Belanger got the play started. Shortly afterwards, Eric Belanger scored the highlight goal of the night at 16:25. Mac Eachern and Cotroneo started the play by moving the puck up ice with a quick transition pass to the right wing. Belanger gathered the puck in at the neutral zone, blazed down the right wing, pulled the puck to the middle of the ice, beating the Cyclones defender 1 on 1 and then slipping the puck past Mike Pesendorfer all in one fluid motion.
In the second period, the Cyclones outshot Guelph by a 21 – 11 margin and scored 2 goals but the Hurricanes countered with 2 goals of their own in the period. Blake Thompson and Dylan Sayles worked the puck deep into the right wing corner and a centering pass to the slot found the stick of Caleb Cameron who quickly slid the disk into the open cage at 8:22. The Hurricanes countered that goal at 9:35 when MacDonald converted a 3 on 2 rush that was started by Wood and Kinsella. The Cyclones replied at 16:57 when Caleb Cameron scored on the rebound, tip toeing around past Furlong in the crease; after Kyle Ellis set up Jeff Bauer for the initial shot. Guelph re-upped their 2 goal lead with their 2nd PP goal at 19:37. In a 4 on 3 scenario, the Hurricanes won the draw to the left of Pesendorfer, Guelph blueliner grabbed the loose puck and with time and space he moved in between the top of the circles and snapped a high screen shot into the mesh. In the play preceding the goal, The Cyclones Matt Halloran and the Hurricanes Dylan Wood locked horns in a battle of fisticuffs that started when a Guelph player went flying into the blindside of Pesendorfer, sending the goaltender sprawling to the ice; which was followed by the donnybrook.
In the third period the Cyclones outshot the Hurricanes by a 16 – 8 count but could not generate anything on the score sheet despite 3 power play chances. Derrick Mitchell tended the blue paint for the Cyclones in the 3rd as Pesendorfer was still feeling the effects of the late 2nd period collision.
New for this Season, the Cyclones wish to extend their thanks and appreciation to Molson Coors for their participation as an advertising sponsor for the 2011 / 2012 season; and once again it is our pleasure to present for your reading enjoyment ……..The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards:
3 Points: Caleb Cameron #10- The native of sunny Sundridge lit up the scoreboard with both of the Cyclones goals. Both Caleb and Jeff Bauer provide a stealthy and deadly 1-2 scoring punch and have exhibited some good chemistry together after 3 games this season.
2 points: David Dalby #9 - the second year forward from Stratford had no points but was whirling dervish all game long from start to finish, leading the Cyclones in hustle, sweat and grit. David had two prime scoring attempts on breakaways but was foiled by the goaltender on both tries.
1 Point: Michael Pesendorfer – The rookie goaltender from Novi Michigan stopped 20 of 24 shots in 40 minutes of play and helped keep this game close with some tough saves. Both teams played a wide open end to end rush style of game; which loosened the defensive coverage and left the goaltenders vulnerable to breakaways and odd man rush attempts.
After the game, it was time for the “Cyclones Meet and Greet” in the Storm Shelter. General Neabel and his regiment of Storm troopers provided the refreshments, Guenther’s Bakery provided the After The Storm Meal for the players and Matt Miller introduced the 2011 – 2012 roster and the members of the greater Cyclones family to all those assembled. The evening was capped off by the musical styling of Mike Pesendorfer and the Cyclones Rookie Smelt Accapella Choir with their rendition of “Streetlight People” (with full apologies to Steve Perry, the musical group Journey and their respective agents and record company representatives).
On Sunday, September 18th the Cyclones will travel east on Highway 86 and then South on Highway 119 to do battle with their arch rivals the Stratford Cullitons. Game time is 7:30 p.m. The last time the Cyclones were there, they gave coach Dave Williams a huge birthday present by deposing the Cullitons in Game #7 of the 2011quarter finals. Fully expect the William Allman Arena to be a lion’s den atmosphere, as the Cullitons and their rabid fans will be pumped up and ready to unleash themselves. (If you have never been there before, then you will not need much time to figure out the situation). The Cyclones and their fans will be ready to counter this and unleash a Cyclonic fury of their own!!! Make the trip down Highway #119 and support the Red, White & Black.
Bleed Red, White and Black. Let’s Go Cyclones!!!!
Elmira Takes First Game in Battle of Hwy 86
On Sunday, September 11th the Cyclones renewed old acquaintances with Elmira at Dan Snyder Memorial Arena and after 60 minutes of play, the Cyclones found themselves on the short end of a 5 – 2 score.
Prior the game the 2010-2011 SugarKings were presented with their Sutherland Cup Rings and the Banner was unveiled. The Mayor of Woolwich Township got in on the act and commented that “Elmira would show Listowel who has control of the Sutherland Cup”. Certainly not the classiest of comments but it did prove to be true in this game. Some fellow Cyclone executive in the stands looked at each other and the common question was “did he really say that?”. The Cyclones are certainly proud of the Elmira SugarKings and their accomplishments last season. The executive and staff of the SugarKings showed much more class than the Mayor as they showed their hospitality by feeding the visiting Cyclones after the game. Thanks very much to Jeff Seddon and his team for their hospitality.
As for the game itself, the Cyclones started out slowly for the first 6 plus minutes of the game, being outshot 9 - 1 and outscored by a 1- 0 count. David Dalby helped get things turned around in a hurry with the help of stalwart defender Sam Paterson at 8:34. Along the right wing boards, Sam pounced on a loose puck in neutral zone and chipped it ahead to Dalby. The shifty forward then proceeded up ice with the puck, driving hard for the net while fending off his check all at the same time before 9 lifting a high backhand shot. The shot caught Nick Horrigan flat footed and deep in the Elmira net and as a result the backward momentum of the goaltender carried the puck over the goal line. Tie Game. Number 9 almost connected a short time later but an attempted deflection of a hard low shot from the blue line whistled high and wide of the top corner. Blake Thompson also showed some initiative using his speed and size inside the offensive zone to create some scoring chances. Shots on goal were 16 – 13 in favour of the host team.
The 2nd period was the turning point in this game as the host team scored 3 times on 14 shots while the Cyclones could only counter with one of their own on 12 shots. Blake Thompson scored his 3rd of the campaign during a 5 on 3 power play situation at 12:35 – assists to Caleb Cameron and Jeff Bauer. The Cyclones could draw no closer despite being given ample opportunity to do so with power play chances late in the 2nd period and in the 3rd period. Speaking of the 3rd period, the referees’ control of the game unraveled late in the stanza as the jaws started flapping and the cheap stuff was flowing back and forth on the ice. A total of 44 penalty minutes and 4 game ejections for fighting were assessed in the final six minutes of play in this match. It is clear that neither team has gained much mutual admiration for the other during the offseason; and that the remaining games between these two teams this season will closely resemble a feud that will quite likely be the envy of the Hatfield’s and the Mc Coy’s.
Turning the focus back to hockey, the Cyclones showed some flashes of good work, effort and ability but over the course of a 60 minute contest, they were inconsistent in their efforts and in their intensity. From this game the Red, White and Black will have learned that should they wish to be successful in future matches, they will need their entire line up to play with more gusto, more intensity and more fire in their belly.
3 Points: David Dalby #9 – One goal scored and very nearly had another after a terrific end to end rush in the dying seconds of the 3rd period. In a blaze of speed the defenders were beat and the goaltender was down and out but the puck rattled off of the post and defied the laws of physics to stay out. David’s gutsy play all game long – right down to the final buzzer is an example of the type of aforementioned effort, intensity and fire that will be required from the entire Cyclones roster this season.
2 Points: Blake Thompson #4 – The sophomore blue liner from Listowel chipped in with 1 power play goal and put forth another steady defensive effort in his own zone throughout the game. Blake did not back down from intimidation tactics put forth all game long by the other team, especially late in the 3rd period.
1 Point: Derrick Mitchell #31 – The veteran goaltender from Goderich put forth a stellar effort in the blue paint as he turned aside 35 of 39 shots, keeping his team in the hunt and keeping the score from becoming a runaway. Keep up the hard work Derrick.
Friday, September 16th at 7:30p.m., the Cyclones will host the Guelph Hurricanes. Following that game, make a point of staying afterwards and coming upstairs to the Storm Shelter for a “Meet and Greet” with the 2011 – 2012 squad, their parents and the rest of the Cyclones family - hockey management, coaches, team executive, trainers, game day staff and game day volunteers. Don’t miss out this chance to meet your 2011 – 2012 Cyclones!!!!!

Let’s Go Cyclones!!!!
Cyclones Win Season Opener 9-1
Shhh!! Can you hear that sound? It’s off in the distance. It is the rustling and swirling of some great and tremendous force and fury of mysterious proportions. The strength and intensity of this hockey storm system has been increasing all summer long and it is straining to unleash its energy all over Southern Ontario. Welcome to the storm Cyclones fans - another action packed season of Listowel Cyclones Junior Hockey has been begun!!
“The Coolest and Fastest Game in Town” has begun the 2011 – 2012 GOJHL season. For Cyclones fans it will be another entertaining year of fast paced hometown junior hockey. For the opposition it appears to be yet another “Stormy Forecast of Pain!!!” The Cyclones brain trust within the ranks of the Management, Coaching and Executive have all worked very hard to assemble another skilled, eager and energetic squad whose talents and efforts will rival that of any other team in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League.
For long time fans and new fans alike it will take some time to get familiar with the faces and names of this year’s squad. Departed from the starting lineup are mainstays and familiar names such as Joel Bowman, Mac Nichol, Bobby Cook, Ryan Horvat, Steven Kerr and Anthony Peters.
Against this backdrop of change, the starting roster for the 2011-2012 Listowel Cyclones still includes some familiar faces and names. 3rd year veteran players Tanner Simpson, Patrick Bell and Brett Catto along with 2nd year players Caleb Cameron, Jeff Bauer, Blake Thompson, Brett McGuinness, David Dalby, Jordan Leyser and Sam Patterson will guide the way for the newcomers; as the team will be looking towards every game and every practice to establish themselves and forge their own team identity against those of their GOJHL adversaries. As the 51 game regular season unfolds between now and the end of February, Father Time and the Hockey Gods will co-conspire to tell exactly what kind of story will be told about these young men and their on ice exploits.
Are you ready? Chapter 1 of this season’s Cyclonic Epic will now begin!!! Prior to the game start, the voice of the Cyclones, Matt Miller, welcomed the fans and introduced the starting line ups for the visiting Kitchener Dutchmen sporting their road blue uniforms, and for the hometown Listowel Cyclones donning their home ice white retro jerseys with red and black striping. With CKNX AM 920 radio on hand for a live broadcast of the play by play action, the puck was dropped at centre ice by Referee Eric Chute to get the game under way.
The Red, White and Black romped to a 9-1 win over the Dutchmen and wasted no time as they scored early and often. The key to the Cyclones victory in this game was creating scoring plays using fast movement and aggressive fore checking in the offensive zone. Time and again the Cyclones won battles to loose pucks and used some good pressure to create turn over situations. The Cyclones were 2 for 9 with the man advantage and 5 for 6 on the penalty kill. Rookie net minder Michael “the Pez” Pesendorfer dispensed a steady 29 save effort in his first start for the Red, White and Black; meanwhile his Cyclones mates peppered Jordan Lee in the Dutchmen net with 48 shots.
Rookie blue liner Kyle Ellis got the scoring parade started with an even strength goal at 1:29. Fore checking by Pat Bell and Tanner Simpson created the turnover inside the zone, where Simpson and Jarret Kup set up the Arthur native for a shot from the right wing point. The puck had eyes as it found its way through heavy traffic in front of the crease, through the legs of Jordan Lee and into the mesh behind him. The Cyclones PK unit capitalized on a glaring give away inside the Dutchmen zone to create a 2-0 lead at 4:21. Caleb Cameron created the havoc and fed the loose puck to Jeff Bauer in the left wing face-off circle area. The sophomore sniper from Lambeth squared up to the net and ripped a high wrist shot over the blocker of Jordan Lee who was caught napping and unaware of threat that was unfolding in front of him. More Cyclonic fore checking resulted in goal #3 at 10:37. Caleb Cameron was the instigator who caused the disruption and fed a loose puck to Steve Hutchison who fed a pass into an open area in front of the net. From inside the hash marks Jeff Bauer pounced on the pass and snapped the puck high glove just under the cross bar. A Kitchener goal late in the period was waved off due to a delayed penalty call. Blake Thompson rounded out the scoring in the 1st at 19:07 with an unassisted goal – a rising shot from the right point that crept over the blocker of Lee – yet another result of an effective and stifling Cyclones fore check. Kitchener outshot Listowel 15 – 13 in the opening 20 minutes.
The 2nd period was dominated by the Cyclones as they outshot their guests by a 20 – 8 margin and outscored them by a 2 – 1 count. Pat Bell got his cyclonic season rolling with a picture perfect drive down the left wing boards before blazing to the net and lifting a shot into the twine. Rookie forward Gerry Ennett assisted on the scoring play at 4:12. Shortly thereafter at 5:29, the Cyclones cashed in their first power play goal of the season when Dylan Sayles rapped a loose puck into the yawning cage - on the 3rd shot of the sequence, after Jarret Kup and Steve Hutchison were unsuccessful with their attempts. Kitchener replied with a PP marker of their own at 10:58 with a crisp shot from the left wing side by Eric Hammerl that Pesendorfer did not fully get a handle on. The puck had just enough forward momentum left to wiggle itself free of the clutches of the Michigan and then wobble along the ice and just cross over the goal line. Graham Kitching and Jordan Mc Beth assisted on the play.
In the 3rd period the Cyclones shut down the Kitchener offence by allowing them a mere 7 shots and at the other end they salted the game away with 3 more goals on 15 shots. Blake Thompson notched his 2nd of the game on the power play at 12:38. After power play formation passes were made inside the zone by Caleb Cameron and Jeff Bauer, the sophomore blueliner had time and space to set up and unleash a rising drive from the top of the face off circles that found the twine. Later on at 15:21 sophomore forward David Dalby recorded his 1st goal of the campaign as Jordan Lee left his crease to play a dump in, but gaffed and coughed up the puck. The fleet footed Dalby was charging in from the left wing side and without breaking his stride #9 collected the loose puck and snapped a hard low shot inside the far post of the yawning cage. At 16:24 Steve Hutchison and Caleb Cameron collaborated to set up Jeff Bauer for his 3rd of the night after Bauer started the play – creating yet another turnover situation deep inside the Dutchmen zone – which Jeff finished off with a shot from inside the hash marks.
New for this Season, the Cyclones wish to extend our thanks and appreciation to Molson Coors for their participation as an advertising sponsor for the 2011 / 2012 season; and once again it is our pleasure to present for your reading enjoyment ……..(drum roll, trumpets and fireworks please)……
The Molson Cyclonic Game Performance Awards:
3 Points Each: Sophomore forwards Jeff Bauer #15 (3 G & 1 A) and Caleb Cameron #10 (4A) were both an offensive force to be reckoned with all game long. The fruits of the fore checking labors and the offensive zone intensity of the Cyclones were realized in part with the scoring output from these two fire brands; and more of the same collective effort will be needed all season long from all of the Cyclones forward lines..
2 Points: Blake Thompson #4 – The sophomore blue liner from Listowel chipped in with 2 goals and a steady defensive effort in his own zone throughout the game. The Cyclones coaches will be looking towards Blake and veterans Sam Patterson and Jordan Leyser for strong leadership of the blueline corps this season.
1 Point: Steve Hutchison #7 – The rookie forward from Arthur had a good outing as he chipped in with 3 assists to help fuel the Cyclones scoring attack. The Red, White and Black will need a steady and consistent effort from all of their newcomers as they battle some tough and nasty opponents this season.
After getting their season started off on the right skate, the Cyclones must now prepare for their next game which will be on Sunday, September 11th at 2:00 p.m. in Elmira; for a match against the defending all Ontario Sutherland Cup Champions. The Sugar Kings will be celebrating their 2011 title prior to the start of the match but after those pre game formalities are finished, the Cyclones will be ready to remind them that last season is long since over and that a new season has just started. Dean T's Pre-Season Game Summary
Cyclones Hockey Withdrawal - Step #11: Cyclones Pre Season Starts August 21st. Wow, August is rolling along at Cyclonic speed and after training camp kick off on the 15th, the Red, White and Black locked horns in a handful of exhibition games, starting with a road game on the 21st at the Timken Centre against the defending GOJHL Western Conference Champion St. Thomas Stars. Both the Stars and the Cyclones will be in rebuilding mode after going fairly deep into the playoffs – the Cyclones to the Midwest Finals against the Elmira; and the Stars to the Sutherland Cup Round Robin Series with Niagara Falls Canucks and the eventual Champions the Elmira Sugar Kings.
The Stars had a very quick start and jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes but the Cyclones got better as game wore on, coming out with more fire and grit in the 2nd and 3rd periods, outshooting the Stars 31 - 25 after 60 minutes. The Cyclones fell short on the scoreboard registering a 6 - 4 defeat
The Cyclones got as close as 5-4 at 11:04 of 3rd period and came close to tying it with 5 minutes to go, but shortly after that chance they gave up a late power play goal at 18:01 which sealed the deal for the host team.
The Cyclones scoring was taken care of by Ben Shelly, Steve Hutchison with a nice forehand - to - backhand - how - do - you - do shorthanded effort, Brett McGuinness, and Matt Halloran with a solid 2nd effort; while helpers were credited to Jerry Ennett (3A), Brett Catto (2A), Pat Bell (1A) and Caleb Cameron (1A). The Cyclones PP went 0 - for 5 and the Red, White and Black PK unit stopped all but one man advantage which produced the game clincher late in the 3rd period. The game featured one bout as Cyclones forward Caleb Cameron and Stars d-man Mike Wooley exchanged greetings deep inside the St. Thomas zone. Wooley started strong with 3 good and solid knocks but Caleb held his ground, wrested his right arm free and then tagged his adversary with two solid haymakers to the melon, sending the Stars blueliner to the ice in a heap. No doubt these 2 fellows will renew acquaintances the next time that they meet. For more Cyclones pre season action check out the Cyclones complete pre season schedule in the “EVENTS” section of the team website.

Dean T's Hockey News
Cyclones Hockey Withdrawal - Step #7: Post NHL DRAFT News.
Congratulations to forward Mark Scheifele for his 2011first round draft selection by the NHL Winnipeg Jets. The 2009 - 2010 Kitchener Dutchmen rookie forward made the leap in 2010 - 2011to the OHL’s Barrie Colts; and has now made the next big step towards a career in the big leagues. This the essence of a GOJHL success story, where a local player gets his chance to establish himself and develop his skills at the local level in preparation to move on and succeed at the next level of hockey. Mark has done just that and is commended for his efforts.
The Kitchener native is following in the footsteps of other former local GOJHL players, namely Tye McGinn of Fergus and Nick Spaling of Drayton. Both former Listowel Cyclone players have had reason to celebrate as of late and have good reason to get excited for the upcoming hockey season.
ick finished his first full season in the NHL with the Nashville Predators registering 8 goals (including his first NHL goal) and 6 assists in 74 regular season games, plus a commendable 12 game playoff performance, marking 2 goals and 4 assists. In a post game interview, after scoring his first NHL goal, Nick was complimented by Nashville coach Barry Trotz for his preparation, hard work and his very close attention to detail at the NHL level. It was those very qualities that have helped Nick work his way up from the 2005 Cherrey Cup Champions and through the ranks of the OHL and the AHL; to emerge as a solid NHL player. Nick has just signed a $2.1million 2 year contract with Nashville and will be hard at work getting ready for the 2011 – 2012 NHL season. Keep up the hard work Nick!!!
Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Flyers have signed left winger Tye Mc Ginn to an entry level contract. In 2008, after being cut by the OHL Ottawa 67’s, the young forward from Fergus, ON. joined the Cyclones for a six week stint starting in early September. During that time Ty burned up the GOJHL with a 2 point per game scoring clip, before hooking up with Hull as a free agent. After registering 30 points in a tough adjustment year with a new team, a new league and a new life in a different province, Ty has had 2 strong seasons since then. In 140 regular season games with the Olympiques he finished his junior career with an overall total of 66 goals and 90 assists. In the 2010 NHL draft Tye was selected in the 4th round (119th overall) by the Flyers. Great work Ty!!!
These are 3 good news stories that can inspire players, coaches and fans alike. Humble beginnings can be the start of great achievements. The GOJHL provides all players with a chance to excel and achieve greatness. To see and hear of these success stories is what helps keep this league in the spotlight, as the next crop of talented players prepares to emerge into the limelight.
Bleed Red, White & Black!!!!!!!!!
Dean T's 12 Steps of The Cyclone Off-Season Program
Wow ….It is June already. The much maligned spring weather has straightened itself out into some decent sun and warm breezes. Since our last report several steps of the Cyclones recovery program have taken place.
As mentioned previously, Step #3, the Cyclones annual year end banquet was held April 27th at the Kin Station in Listowel. Good food, some cold beverages, some playful ribbing and some inspiring and heartfelt words made for another terrific banquet. The golfing beforehand was showered with rain but the 19th hole at the Listowel Golf Club provided some much needed refuge and refreshment from the unruly skies.
Step #4 involved the Cyclones annual spring skate on April 30th and May 1st. Listowel Memorial Arena was the scene as many prospective players were put through their paces under the watchful eye of the Cyclones hockey brain trust. Early indications suggest that the turnout featured another strong crop of skaters. More details to follow in the days to come as the roster spots are sorted out.
The Month of May opened the doors to many possibilities as Cyclones fans found themselves gravitating away from the rink and into other things. Step #5….get outside. After a long, cold and snowy winter; followed by a cool and wet start to spring, the weather yielded to sun and warmer temperatures. Cyclones fans took full advantage of the break in the weather to get outside for a multitude of activities….doing some yard work, shining up the car, hopping on a bike, taking the Harley for a spin, heading to the lake to open the cottage, planting a flower bed or a garden. For as much as winter is the right time to be indoors at the hockey rink, spring and summer provides the prime time to break out from underneath winter's spell and get outside.
Part of getting outside means hitting the links, and the Cyclones Golf Tourney is coming to the Listowel Golf Club on Saturday, June 18th. Registration is at 10:00 a.m. with a shot gun start at 11:00 a.m. It is 18 holes of Cyclonic Golf Action followed by an equally Cyclonic "All You Can Eat" Dinner at the Kin Station starting at 6:00 p.m.
Cost for Golf and Dinner is $125.00 AND INCLUDES the golf cart, driving range prior to golf and eligibility for some nifty prizes. If you are unable to golf but want to join in for dinner, then by all means do so for the super low cost of $29.00. So Cyclones fans circle JUNE 18th on your calendar and make sure to join in the fun. This event is open to all so get your name in with either Cyclones President Don Annett or Cyclones General Manager Wayne Long. Environment Canada has guaranteed that the weather will be nothing short of Cyclonic (i.e. sun and blue skies); so get your gang of 4 signed up and get ready for the most intense 18 holes of golf since the Masters at Augusta, Georgia.
Cyclones golf and Step #5 Get Outside fit together like a puck and stick, hand and glove, sweet and sour, salt and pepper, gin and tonic……..say no more,
See you at the links on June 18th..... FORE!!!
Bleed Red, White & Black!!!

Sponsorship Opportunities
For anyone who has not been approached to sponsor this years team and would like to, please contact Don Annett at donannett@hotmail.com. We have many options available for our 2011-2012 program.
Cyclones Changes
Most of you are probably aware of the fact that Mike Brooks has stepped down as GM. Mike has been with the Cyclones for 5 years. He was Assistant Coach for 1 year, Head Coach for 3, and GM for 1. Mike was a key part of the success that the Cyclones had over this time. We wish him all the best and are sure he'll be part of our team again in the future. Jeff Bloemberg has also resigned his position of Assistant Coach. Jeff has been a rock solid influence with our defence and we wish him all the best as well.
Dave Williams has been promoted to Director of Hockey Operations as well as Head Coach and is busily working on next season. Joining Dave on our management team is former Cyclone player, Wayne Long. He has been our VP for the past few seasons and will now be our GM. We also welcome back Trevor Fraser to our coaching staff. Dave, Wayne, and the entire staff were busy at the rink this past weekend as over 60 talented young players were showing if they have what it takes to be a member of the 2011-2012 Cyclone Team. Dave and Wayne have made some key signings so check back next week for another edition of Deat T.'s 12 Step Off-Season Program. It is rumoured that he will talk about some of the Cyclonic signings.
Dean T.'s 12 Step Off-Season Program
Another action packed season of Listowel Cyclones Junior Hockey concluded on April 8th / 2011….a mere 2 weeks ago.
"The Coolest and Fastest Game in Town" is on hiatus until August training camps begin. In the meantime, what is a dyed in the wool Red, White and Black supporter supposed to do?
Have no fear as your intrepid Cyclones Reporter has hold of a 12 Step Program to help get you through until the start of the 2011 – 2012 hockey season.
First out of the box, is Step#1. Customary after the end of every season, it is time for pause, reflection and contemplation on the busy season that has just passed, while enjoying a cold beverage of one's choice. This reporting spot is not endorsing going overboard, but if you desire more than one beverage, well that is entirely up to your own choice. Enjoy!!!
Step #2 involves watching other former Cyclones who are still engaged in playoffs in whatever league they may be playing in. Given the Junior B Cyclones deep 2011 Playoff run, finishing 5th of the 26 teams in the GOJHL, the timing of their season's end has severely limited one's choices.
The Senior "AA" Monkton Wildcats finished runner up to the Saugeen Shores Winterhawks in the WOAA League Championship Series. A salute to the former Cyclones who have gradually risen through the ranks of Senior Hockey to claim their 2011 South Division crown and who put forth a very strong effort to come within 2 wins of a WOAA League crown. The list is a who's who of former Red, White and Black warriors: Kyle Verberne, Mike Feltz, Alan Lamont, Matt May, Nick Seiler, Kevin Ward, Shayne McClure, Dawson Smith and Brendon Haefling. A salute to former Cyclones blueliner Derek Skinner and also to Dustin Catto (older brother of Cyclones' forward Brett Catto) as they and their Winterhawks teammates captured their 2nd league title in recent years.
Given that former Cyclones playing in the GOJHL's Western Division and the Greater Horseshoe Division have been eliminated; as have any playing in Junior "C"; one must turn towards the ranks of the NHL to watch Nick Spaling and the Nashville Predators do battle against the Anaheim Ducks in the opening round of the 2011 NHL Stanley Cup tournament. After toiling in the minors for almost 2 full seasons with the Nashville's AHL affiliate - the Milwaukee Admirals; 2010-2011 was Nick's first full season in the NHL. In 74 regular season games, Nick registered 8 goals (including his first NHL goal) and 6 assists. In a post game interview, after scoring his first NHL goal, Nick was complemented by Nashville coach Barry Trotz for his preparation, hard work and his very close attention to detail at the NHL level. It was those very qualities that have helped Nick emerge from a 2004-2005 Cherrey Cup Championship Season with the Cyclones, to a successful 3 year career and a 2008 Memorial Cup Championship Finals showing with the Kitchener Rangers, before embarking on an NHL career starting with Milwaukee in the 2008-2009 season.
Step #3 involves the Cyclones Annual Banquet, which will be held Wednesday April 27th and Step #4 will center on the Cyclones 2011 Spring Skate which is slated for Saturday, April 30th and Sunday May 1st at Listowel Memorial Arena. More details about these upcoming are currently posted on the website and more post event stories and happenings can be relayed in the near future.
In two short weeks the 12 Step Cyclones Hockey Withdrawal program has begun in earnest. Steps #1 and #2 are well underway and Steps #3 and #4 are fast approaching. Stay Tuned.
Bleed Red, White & Black!!! Go Cyclones!!!
